Betr and WynnBET Get Green Light to Exit Massachusetts Market This Month
It's official: Betr and WynnBET will be exiting the Massachusetts sports betting market later this month.
It took approval from the Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC) to grant the request by the two struggling Massachusetts sports betting apps to cease operations, leaving just six of our best sports betting sites still taking bets in the Bay State.
The decision came in a meeting last Thursday when the MGC waived the mandated 90-day notice period in order for a sportsbook to cease operations in the state. That waiting period is generally set aside to settle such matters as Massachusetts sportsbook promos, deposits, and the return of funds to customers.
Obviously, Massachusetts Gaming Commission officials were satisfied with Betr and WynnBET on those matters, as they are letting Betr shutter operations in the state on Friday, February 16, while WynnBET will close up shop in Massachusetts on Friday, February 23.
Betr to withdraw from Massachusetts by Friday
Betr has already begun to shut down their Massachusetts operations, which comes at a curious time for the nascent sportsbook.
Although wagering markets were active for the sportsbook through Super Bowl weekend, new customers and deposits weren't considered for the single-biggest sports betting day on the American calendar.
According to Betr company brass, customer deposits were stopped on Tuesday, February 6. Funds were said to have been paid out by Wednesday, February 7, dependent on a customer play-through.
By Monday - the day after the Super Bowl - all customers were to be informed of the sportsbook's cessation date, which will come this Friday. All Betr markets will be closing in Massachusetts by Thursday at 11:59 p.m. ET.
Betr customers in Massachusetts will have until March 16 to withdraw funds. A check will be made out to all Betr clientele that fail to meet the March 16 deadline.
WynnBET to shutter operations later this month
WynnBET will take a slightly longer time to close up shop in Massachusetts, as it announced via an email to customers on Monday - the day after the Super Bowl.
The sportsbook will officially cease operation in the Bay State on Friday, February 23, with a withdrawal window for WynnBET Massachusetts funds opening for 30 days after that date.
Any open bets at the end of the 30-day period will result in contact by a WynnBET representative to determine how any open bets can be resolved.
“We will give them an opportunity for fair value for their wager that they could place with another operator," Jennifer Roberts, VP and General Counsel for WynnBET, said at the meeting last week. "It won’t necessarily be a payout of the full wager because the wager is unsettled. At a minimum we would be returning their stake that they would be able to place with another operator."
