i had my doubts about monfils here but if you look at it, he only loses to top notch players on indoor hard courts (with exception of donald young, who played lights out and got lucky against monfils about a month ago). A lot of motivation here for Monfils but Anderson is really getting the better of him this first set...holding his serves easier and threatening monfils's serves quite a bit. Giving the break back to anderson was a huge shift in momentum

demonata....contrary to what anyone would have believed, monfils is getting crushed in the long rallies so far. Anderson is overpowering him and i'm stunned how many balls he's getting into play smh

Since his 2nd summer matchup against Djokovic when he took the first set and nearly won Monfils has been doing A LOT of serve and volleying. Done it a few times today - not always finishing off the volley. Not the time I need you to work on your volley's Gael

Exactly man. I can't see how people say monfils is a bad player.

Few nervous moments but one set in the bag. Monfils has only won 53% of his first serves. Too many missed volleys

He's not a bad player. It's just his head is always not on his shoulders

I like Monfils despite his headaches and making me hold my breath every time he does a split on a hard court

Backhand down the line is probably his best shot for sure, got that break with it. He's been serving and vollying much more lately and he's doing quite good with it but the service game to tie up 5-5 he missed 3 easy ones in the same exact manner and nearly lost the set bc of that. That was a HUGE hold and then the subsequent break was big. Needs to keep this up but lucky to have won that first set after getting drilled on his first serve throughout by anderson. Needs to break early here, don't like that anderson serves first here...let's go MONFILS

Oh no, a great returner and a solid serve...he's just inconsistent but in indoor hards he will put up a fight and competitive match against anybody, including the top 4. He makes things more difficult than he has to at times and can go through stretches of poor play within matches...a very good player to fade at the right times also. Unfortunately, his style of play for his tall stature has led to many injuries and i feel it will continue to do so. I've never really liked him as a player but over the past yr i've liked him more just bc of his heart and he puts on quite a shower.

Serve reminds me of roddicks. One of the many reasons I like him. Also his return and rallys kind of like murray. Also his athleticism is great.During tough opponents he does make it harder I agree. Also am always worried about injuries. Overall he is one of my favorites though.
