#113lol Isner has been playing this bad for quite a while now...this guy can't hit more than 1 shot in a rally to save his life...he probably has one of the worst returns of any top 50 player.
The only points he's won this match are Aces or UE's by Bubka, literally.Comment -

#118Holla.
Draw will be released tonight. The names you will see: Hewitt, Isner, Karlovic, Blake, Mahut, Querrey, Sock, R.Harrison & more. Do keep in mind that Isner has won this two years running, so you may want to think before you fade him here. Everyone else seems like fair game. Seeds in 2012 were 4-4 in round one. In 2011, they were 4-4. They aren't necessarily all dogs, but watch out for the seeds dropping early. Usually a good tournament to take a couple long shot futures though that may make it deep.Comment -

#122Past results, draws and seeds from the tournament archive in men's professional tennis on the ATP Tour.
Top 8 seeds: Querrey, Isner, Sijsling, Hewitt, Roger-Vasselin, Matosevic, De Schepper & Ram
Last three could be prime 1st round KO victims. De Schepper and Ram get qualifiers. Matosevic vs. Sock. Isner's draw looks tough. I would bet against a three-peat.Comment -

#124Querrey will tank if he gets pushed. He has little to no points to defend. I remember Sela somehow beat him here last year, but that was after Querrey blew a lead in the second set and threw in the towel. If he jumps out to early leads and doesn't face much pressure, he could go deep here.
Sijsling might be the one seed you can trust, but who knows how much he cares about this craptacular tournament? I reckon Sijsling and Hewitt (because this is one of the few tournaments out there he can still win at his ripe old age) might be the two surviving seeds.
Ram is always a good bet here. He knows the courts well, even without PT during the qualies. But as EP pointed out, playing a qualifier in the first round is always a tricky spot. If he gets past the first round, I like his chances to go deep (although Przwhateverhisnameis looms as a tough second-round foe).
Sock is capable of knocking off Mato, no doubt about that. I'm intrigued to hear beefcake's thoughts. He's always wreckin' it (I mean that in a good way, beef) during this tournament.Comment -

#125There are some good qualifiers in here too who I would trust on grass to beat uninterested opponents. Bemelmans is the top seed in qualifying and very capable. Zverev is #2, always an interesting guy.Comment -

#127Pavic gave Bemelmans hell in the first set, but the Belgian pulled through in the tiebreak. He might score an upset if he qualifies for the draw. Zverev may not even make the draw. Chvojka is up a set in their qualifying final.Comment -

#128Sugita looking to knock off Levine to get the "big" upsets underway at this tournament. Very early in that one, though. I imagine tomorrow's matchups will not be as friendly to the favorites in terms of straight-up results.
So far, Koslov (somewhere around +450 ML) and Mannarino (short dog who honestly should have been the favorite, and won outright as expected) have covered the spread. Sugita was +4 and +4.5 most places, so we'll see how he does ATS.
I think everyone was on Mannarino, but moreso because of Blake's form and the odd price ... I don't count this one, TBH. It really had nothing to do with the theme of this tournament.
What do you guys think about tomorrow's slate?Comment -

#131Today wasn't a bad day for the dogs. I hit on Kuznetsov and Smyczek, and I feel like I missed an opportunity by not throwing something on Dr. Ivo. But he was ill before this tournament, and I wasn't sure how ERV would approach this event after he won the title at another craptastic tank-filed tournament in Delray Beach earlier this year.
Here's what I have through two days:
Dogs are 8-7 against the spread (5-6 today after a 3-1 showing Monday) for the tournament and 6-9 straight up. Dogs were a decent 4-7 straight up today, with Pospisil being the only one priced below +180 at most places. Sijsling, Mahut and Hewitt looked like the most engaged players based on the scorelines, but Mahut has a tough draw with Smyczek in the next round.Comment -

#133Mahut was pretty wonky in the 2nd set against Williams. Got down a break early, but Williams didn't have the courage to make it stick and gave it right back. Williams had a few more opportunities to break Mahut in the 2nd after he barely won a handful of points off Mahut's serve in the 1st. I still think this draw is perfect for Mahut if he wants it - to make the Finals. He also fits the bill as a Wildcard as one tends to make a deep run.
I don't see Smyczek as particularly tough. Querrey wasn't sharp at all, so Smyczek took advantage. I think most anyone who played Querrey today would have beat him. His serve was terrible and he was in trouble almost every service game.
Smyczek might battle Mahut for a set or so, but if Mahut stays engaged like he was in the 1st set - Smyczek won't hold up. Isner looked a lot better than he has in a while on the bottom of the draw. I still think that one comes down to Hewitt and now I would be willing to say Isner .. although an Isner-Ivo quarterfinal could be real interesting. Rootin' for Dr.Ivo to get his swerve on here. Deserves it.
2nd round you have to pick your spots on the underdogs. One of the seeds who survives the 1st round typically goes out in the 2nd. Sijsling or Ram might be the most prone due to match-ups perhaps, but realistically all four seeds who are left have to play solid because they are playing guys who will be hungry to win if they show up in poor form.Comment -

Isner has the toughest matchup, but he's been money here the last three years. Maybe Russell serves lights out and upsets Sijsling? Sijsling has been in trouble in a lot of service games this week against two weaklings, and Russell has quietly put together a winning streak.
Hewitt, as always, can be prone to loose play at times. Hernych has had a nice run this grass season, but I think Hewitt will get past him.
As crazy as it sounds, we might have three seeds in the semifinals for a change.Comment -
