    Contests
I'm going to start running regular contests in the tennis forum if there's enough interest - some of which will be poster funded and others which will be kindly sponsored by SBR.

    My questions to you are:

    1. Would you be interested in a weekly contest or do you think they should just be reserved for the Slams? If not weekly, bi-weekly? To make it less time-consuming to submit an entry, we could always just pick players from the Round of 32 or even the Round of 16 onwards.

    2. Would you participate in both a women's and a men's contest or are you more interested in the men for the non-Slams?

    3. Do you think the format should remain as it has been: Pick your card for the entire tournament? Or would you prefer to have the option to alter your picks ie before the quarter-finals for a penalty? The people who didn't have to/choose to change their picks at all would obviously still be at an advantage but at least those posters whose finalists were knocked out early are still able to remain competitive until the end.

    4. Any other suggestions?

    Thanks!

Only really interested in men's but would do both.

Shari I HATE the way we have been doing the competitions. It is so time consuming and sometimes gets confusing. I'd rather just pick on a match by match basis to be honest. It's way funner that way too. Like how we did the world cup league.

If anyone can get SBR to sponsor some of this its you

Just my two cents to save from having to pick dozens of matches each week, maybe just have people pick the semifinalists, finalists and champions for each tournament. You'd have to figure out how to award points - maybe a certain number of points for each correct semifinalist, finalist and the champ + bonus points according to ranking for each pick. That way if someone picked an outside to do well and they did, they'd get credited for that.

Yeah, I agree with both of you - the one thing that held me back from entering more contests was the thought of having to pick every match from the first round. It gets too time-consuming and if you forget about a contest starting until a short while before the first match kicks off, you really don't have a chance to get your entry in on time.

EP, I really like that idea of weighting the picks so people are rewarded for dogs who do well. I'll play around with it today and try to come up with something. Once I do, I'll post proposed rules in here so everyone can give feedback on them before Monday.

i think that's good of you to take on the contests....I don't think every week would work very well for you or for participation.

I think quarterfinalists and on would be a good way to do it...too many similarities if we just did semi's and on...and maybe as a tie-breaker we would have to predict the number of games in a final match.

We should definitely have contests for each of the majors and master's events. I enjoy picking earlier rounds otherwise everyone will simply pick the faves on a particular surface for the last 8 or 16. Weekly tennis contests would be a bit too much of a grind and diminish the entertainment factor. Regardless, thanks for taking the initiative here Shari.

could always allot people signing up a certain amount of points, and use those to bet within the contest. And at the end of the tournament say the top 3 people who have the most points win the prize. I hope this makes sense. (Like giving everyone $10 and seeing who can make the most during a specific tourney but pts instead of money)

                  1. Weekly is probably to much for me. I go in and out w/ regards to my ability to post and gamble.
                  2. I am only interested in ATP.
                  3. I like the tournament format and would also like a total units format, so like any SBR contest where there is a min/max amount of bets throughout a time period, some best bets etc. and the top unit winner wins.

I replied back to a PM from Lou a few days ago but am still waiting for a response in regards to SBR donating some points for an Open contest so I'm starting to think he may be on vacation?

If I haven't heard back by tomorrow, I may just run one starting with the Quarters next week, giving weighting to a player's seeding that would rely on posters contributing points to join. Once I've sorted it out, I'll start a new thread with the contest details and if there's enough interest we can take it from there.

Yeah, that's what I kind of suspected. I thought I'd be able to catch him by replying to him on Monday but it seems I may have still missed him.

Silly SBR for scheduling the Bash the weekend before a Slam.

I would guess that majors only would work out the best and get the most participation.

Would just like to say that I actively read most of the threads in this subforum and have enjoyed reading (and tailing!) everyone's thoughts round here-it's amazing how civil and "readable" this subforum is in comparison to some of the others around here!

I think the big thing would be after Slams, deciding which tournament to play each week. Having multiple tourneys each week, I think it'd be easier to pick just one for ATP and one for WTA.

Okay, so here's what I've come up with. If anyone can spot anything glaringly obvious that won't work, please let me know before I put up the contest threads early Monday your time.

                                  1. There will be a fee to enter - I'm thinking 10-20 points - and SBR will also be generously contributing a decent amount to the prize pool. My logic behind charging a fee is that it's only fair that we post up as well to both increase the prizes and encourage SBR to keep funding the tennis forum contests.

                                  2. I'll be running both an ATP and WTA contest. Admittedly there is more interest in the ATP on the forum but I believe there will still be enough posters willing to compete in both.

                                  3. Both contests are going to involve picking the winners from each match BEGINNING with Round 3. This will equate to choosing 31 winners. Even typing that out seems a lot but I think considering the size of prizes involved, it's only fair that we put some effort into it. There will be bonus points awarded based on seeding - you pick someone seeded lower and they get through, you get a few extra points. You pick a substantially lower seed and they get through, you get an increased bonus. I am also debating allowing one pick change after each round for a penalty ie your player gets through but after seeing him/her play you think they're going to flame out in their next match, you can trade them out for a 10 point (or whatever) penalty.

I debated doing the betting contest but I think the fact that it's a Slam will be a bit too much considering the number of matches involved. As for picking matches after each round, I still really like that idea too but it may put people outside of the tennis forum at a disadvantage if they're not daily visitors to the site and I think these contests should be easy to enter for everyone.

If anyone has any suggestions/comments before I post the 'official' threads, let me know in here. Oh - all picks will be PM'ed to me as well to avoid another Venditto.
