#4Federer didn't play bad. People need to realize this. Soderling won this match, Federer didn't lose it. Here was Soderling's gameplan. He will pummel the ball and either he will outclass Roger or he will lose with a bunch of unforced errors. Soderling also planned on attacking the Swiss' 2nd serve. He could not do that in the first set as Fed served extremelly well, therefore Robin lost the set. In sets 2-4 Roger's first serve % fell, and Soderling hammered Feds 2nd serve returns.
Soderling's ground strokes were brutal. There's nothing ANY player can do when your opponent is blasting the ball and constantly hitting it deep. Soderling won this match with his aggressiveness, power ground strokes, 2nd serve returns, and deep returns.
I'll say this, and you all know how much I've been praising Nadal this clay court season. If Soderling faces Nadal in the finals and plays the same way (accurate deep groundstrokes) he will beat Nadal. Now Nadal will have to have a bad first serve % for half of the gameplan to work, which I don't see happening.Comment -

You can't beat Nadal from the baseline at the French. If this were on a hard court, those deep powerful strokes Sod used today would destroy Nadal.
You won't beat Nadal on clay this year with shear power. It's not going to happen. If you want to get into a groundstroke game with Nadal, you're going to lose. If Soderling just goes for all his shots like he did today, he will lose because there is just too much spin on Nadal's shot, and Sod's 40 unforced errors today would easily become 55.
You need to have a different game plan against Nadal on clay. You need to play the net, shorten rallies, and serve perfectly. Sod's serve today was great so thats a nice advantage there. Can't get into long rallies with nadal and if you think Sod's shots will have that much power on them they won't because of Nadal's spin.Cause Sleep is the Cousin of DeathComment -

#8As Tennisbabe and goatmilk already said...Fed didn't give this match away - it was taken from him...Soderling's shots were insanely good today.
Here is a better question....how the H#$ does Soderling lose to Rochus the week before the French (on clay) and then blow away everyone including Fed all the way up to the semi's of the French open?? If there is any conspiracy its in that match and not the one today.
I lost big-time on that match and i learned my lesson about going for a guy the week before a major...but seriously...some were talking about some sort of lingering injury...there was no injury so that loss bites. but he made me cash a soderling wins 3-1 today for a few bucks +991 or something....
i also had fed to win 3-1,3-2 and sod 3-2 win as well for a small amount.Comment -

#9I never said Soderling will want to get in a baseline rally. The power game involves winning points in less than 3 rallies on your serve/4 or less when receiving. My point was that Soderling attacked Feds 2nd serve today and that's why he won. Plain and simple. That's what the match came down to. 42%, 55% and 54% were the 2nd serve points won by Federer in the 2nd-4th sets.
As great as Nadal is, his biggest weakness is his 2nd serve. If Soderling gets many looks he will end the point quickly. Nadal has won just over 52% of his 2nd serves this tournament. That won't get it done against Robin.
Then again all this is moot because Berdych will beat Soderling and then beat Nadal after Rafa sprains his ankle in warmupsComment -

#12Nadal is still only -235 to win the French..????
I thought after fed lost his odds would be up to around -350 or something.Hell at these odds you would be getting his opponent in the final good enough odds in the final to ensure profit...
