    Cilic v. Tsonga
Before I suckered here, anyone care to provide their two cents as to why Tsonga is favored? I thought I heard or read that Cilic tweaked an ankle, but not sure if that's true or factors into this line at all.

Tsonga hasn't taken a set of Cilic since 2011 and has never played big late in GS's. As defending champ here, you'd figure the higher ranked player would be getting more love.

because Tsonga has great form right now
but Cilic hasn't done squat since winning this tournament a year ago.
    (seen as a fluke).

Probably this. I forget which set, one of the earlier ones against Chardy he rolled the ankle but he finished off strong.

          Thanks for the input.

I have not seen Tsonga play yet this tourney. Smoking Nieminen and Paire kind of surprised me. Off hand I feel like he is usually good to sleep through at least one set in the opening round.

Figured Paire just ran out of steam and couldn't physically get up for the early match playing a lot of tennis since Wimbledon, so didn't know how much stake to put in that.

I can't pass up Cilic. Confidence must be high given he has not lost since 2012 here (2013 inj.). Always played well in NY only career losses since after breaking through to main draw are against Djokovic, Nishikori, Federer, Murray and Del Potro (09' when he won). Has not laid any eggs either and interestingly won first set in 4 of 5 loses. If he takes first off of Tsonga, here we go again mentally may creep in as he (Tsonga) can't seem to get over the hump.

However, tennis is not my main sport, and I while I have followed it closely for many years, I never had any formal instruction and do not see a lot of the technical aspects of the game that others do, so more opinion welcome.

My two cents is basically I think Tsonga has been the better player at this tournament, results can be skewed but I think Cilic genuinely ran into a few players who ran out of gas which explains some of his strong finishes.
Tsonga has dominated players from the get go. Normally dogs have been good to me and even just lines but I'll likely be taking Tsoga. BOL either way to you

Tsonga beat Benoit Paire which is not an easy thing these days.

Yeah, Tsonga did beat Paire, but those who saw that match will agree Paire was playing 3 out of 10, nowhere near his performance in previous rounds.

Cilic is a fighter, he will not give up after loosing a set or even 2. He will fight on and on. Tsonga is not so good in this aspect so I would pick Cilic here.

ATP: Maric Cilic- Jo Wilfried Tsonga

I love JWT who is always great fun to watch and he is my youngest daughter's favourite player by far, but I cannot really agree with him being such a short priced favourite today. The French star has never made it beyond the quarters in seven attempts at the US Open and he has underperformed time and time again in slams, at least in relation to his ability and come up short far too often against fellow top ranked players. Since making his one slam final back in 2008, he has failed to go beyond R4 14 times, made ten quarters, where he is 5-5 and is 0-5 in semis, that is not a "bad" record and many tennis players would snatch your hand off for it, but he should have done much better and a two week tournament is more often than not 4-5 days too long for him ! He is 35-68 through his career versus top 10 ranked players and just 50% against those ranked 6-10 which is his peer group, he has a 33% win rate against top 20 players here and at Wimbledon. Against taller players like Cilic, that record is far worse, he is 15-33 through his career versus taller top 20 ranked players, 7-27 versus the top ten and 2-11 in the last three years. Remember that last group doesn't include Djokovic,Federer or Rafa, so is again, very much his peer group.

Cilic is defending champion in NY and has a lot of ranking points to defend, he lost the first few months of this season with a shoulder injury, but looks to be coming back to his best now and repeated his quarter final run at Wimbledon from last year and has since played at a similar level in build up events through the hard court season. It was at the quarter final stage last year when he beat Tomas Berdych that he stepped up a level and he must have a better than 42% chance of winning today, but don't tell my daughter !

Marin Cilic to beat Jo Wilfried Tsonga 2.36 Pinnacle Sports/ Sportmarket Pro.

Tsonga is a joke looks like shit about to lose 2nd set now since he lost his serve . He has not even come close to beating cilic on his serve except once in the first set.

Well he has one more chance to draw even if not down 2-0 he has not beaten him on his serve yet.

A break there would have been huge. He definitely looks a lot better now, but getting that break would have officially shifted momentum into his favor, but he couldn't quite get it.
