Didn't have the best of years last year but my love for tennis has me back again.

1st play of the year

ATP Sydney

2* Groth vs Muller UNDER 25.5

Total is high because we have two rock servers up against one another. This would mean we have to see 2 tiebreaks or 3 sets and I just dont see it. Groth has really worked on his game since last year - his ground strokes are much more reliable especially his backhand. Muller you get what you get from him every year - solid challenger player but struggles on the ATP tour. Neither players are great at coming back after losing the first set so don't think we see a marathon 3 setter either. If i had to take a side, i'd take groth.

2* Fognini M/L vs Del Potro

Yes Del Potro won his first match after a good 6 month lay off and yes Fognini looked like dogshit in the Hopman Cup. But I think Del Potro still has a while to go in terms of returning to his best. Hopman cup is essentially exhibition games so I wouldn't read into too much re Fognini's form. But I think if Fognini plays well, he can win this purely cause you have someone whose been playing tennis for the past 6 months activity versus someone still finding his feet.

not off to greatest of starts, I saw too much value on Fog to pass up on. But at the end the day, Fogo (as he usually does) beat himself more than Del Potro beat him. The price you pay for betting on a headcase but anyway, we fight to live another day.
