There are different displays all over the city. The one that stops the tennis just happens to be the one that's closest. I assume they keep that particular one short to accommodate the tennis if it's still on but still allows people with kids to celebrate in the CBD and get home at a decent hour.

I've seen maybe 10 kangaroos in the outer suburbs since moving to Australia. A lot more near highways. Koalas are in trees so you need to go out looking for those.

It's the country's national holiday. This is a sports match. Not surprising that the millions of people who live here are more concerned with celebrating their national day than worrying about a tennis match that may or may not even still be playing by the time the fireworks go off. It would have to be 45 mins of bottle rockets and sparklers or every person in your city would be coughing up $100 per head per year for that.

The huge NYE fireworks in Sydney only go for 15 minutes and that costs over 6 million apparently.
