BetIslands moves to .MX domain - BetOnline pay through the nose!
I just went to log onto BetIslands.ag and got resolved to BetIslands.mx (Mexico country code domain extension).

Begs the question why did BetOnline.ag pay a fortune for the .ag extension?

Understandable why 5dimes and Heritage did it for just a few bucks, but why did BetOnline pay big?

What are the benefits/true value for a US facing sportsbook to reside at only a .eu or .ag domain?

Betonline thinks they have an extremely valuable name. Forgot the exact history, but the name was big to them from the start. Shows you how asleep at the wheel they are.

Good point, and still domains that would cost five-figures as a .com are available as a new reg. with the .ag?!
BOL could have bought another country code, and used that money saved for promo, advertising, etc.

Do you think it was a smart move for 'defensive' purposes?
There are several well known books using two letter country codes other than .ag or .eu.
Bovada is one, and I can't think of the other couple I've seen, but they are out there.

The ag or mx or eus...none of it matters to the books. I think in BetIslands case, it's easier to use from a DNS IT perspective. BetIslands needs to build up their IT team in their new office. That's one of the challenges for any website when you switch hosting to your own...big investments in the receiving IT team are are necessary. There are big things from DoS attacks, to database mirroring and syncing, to managing pipe during peak times. They are getting the crash course but I think they'll get it sorted out.

                          Bill,
Thanks tons. I Always read a thread when I see you have added to it :-)
When you write that it's easier for some books to use one country code over another because of DNS/IT are you saying that there are specific country code domains that must have their servers physically located in those countries?

As of last night, .com and .ag URL requests get bounced to the standard Godaddy splash.

That may be part of Betislands pulling away from the DOS attacks, as now they avoid bandwidth getting lost to redirects. Just be sure to type in .mx

does this mean their will employees will be hanging from a bridge or left on highways with their hands and feet chopped off if something goes wrong?

they don't mess around in Mexico

They'll only have to physically enter Mexico to hard reboot the server. (unplug it then replug it).

.mx seems like one of the last domains they should have used.... why not .eu ?

I can't seem to understand how there wouldn't be safeguards against these type of attacks automatically in place when one sets up a professional site?
