    User Names and Passwords
I've been advised to use various passwords to protect myself from hacking. However, is this the same for user names, and if not, why? Does anyone here share the same user name at multiple sites? I know I do.

You might get more response to this in Player's Talk, but if you are referring to sportsbooks, then most of them don't let you pick your own username, so choosing a unique username from your other accounts is not an issue. However, if you are referring to websites in general, I do use different usernames, but as long as you aren't using the same username and password combination on multiple sites (i.e. you change one and/or the other each time), you should be safe enough, assuming your system isn't keylogged or anything.

I have several books where I've chosen my own username, including Betfair and Matchbook

I don't think username is much of an issue but most definitely one should NEVER use the same password at any books or in fact anywhere at all.

A lot of bookies let you choose your own username so most of the time I use only one (unless it's already taken )
I try to have different passwords or at least different variations of the password where it's possible.

I suggest you do more that try
And variations aren't a good idea, though certainly an improvement on identical passwords

Yeah, Matchbook was the only one that came to mind; I'm not eligible for Betfair

A random series of numbers and letters is really the way to go for passwords. And I agree with Hareeba that they should be totally different if possible. I google for random password generators every time I need to register a new account.

Betfair and Matchbook aren't rated on this site. Why is this?

They are. Betfair is an A. Matchbook is a B-.

I see. I'm always looking at the A+ sites, but I've heard nothing but positive comments on these two. I wonder why they aren't rated any higher toward the top?

Use RoboForm for windows. There's a free version, and it keeps track for you. I used to use the generate random password button (it installs as a toolbar in your browser), and it'd forever remember the password. I've since migrated to ubuntu, so now I just use lastpass

I used something similar some years ago. However my HD died on me and I did not back up my PW's anywhere.

After learning this lesson I have about 10 passwords I use and I have variations of each. Some are as long as 25 characters and some as short as 8.

If I ever get amnesia or lose my memory I am screwed.

So use lastpass.com. It stores your usernames/pwds encrypted locally on your pc, but also on their website (it's fully encrypted, and they don't know your key, so they couldn't view them if they wanted to). So, anytime you need your passwords, they're always there. Awesome program.
