State of Nevada running a budget deficit?gambling as economic development a good idea
I just had KNNU radio on the internet and the big story in Vegas besides OJ showing up for a downtown court hearing tieing up traffic was that the state of Nevada is running a few hundred million dollar deficit. How on god's green earth can that state with all it's gambling revenue and natural resources and sparse population be running a deficit???There should in all reallity be zero unemployment in Vegas but it seems like the same people that ran San Francisco in the ground with out of control social spending moved to Vegas. So much for Nevada being a future safe haven where people move there to get away with paying state taxes.

Are there any states that haven't desperately whored themselves to get gambling revenue yet?Utah is one I'm certain but I'm not sure if there are any bible belt states left who didn't jump on the gambling bandwagon. It's absolutely pathetic when you see a governor stand before a podium announcing that by opening slot parlors or casinos it will boost the standard of living and tax revenue in a state.Talk about having to throw a hail mary pass in the endzone with one second left to tie a game as a desperation measure.

It's funny how when states and people get desperate they resort to whoring themselves.I swear that one in ten women between the ages of 18-60 have posed nude where their pictures are splashed all over the trial offer porn internet sites. The porn industry in this country has to be absolutely as huge as gambling and I'm sure it's all mafia run.

Next after legalizing gambling is legalizing selling hard drugs, prostitution, getting huge prisons built taking in prisoners from other states and countries and getting toxic waste dumps.

I'm a libertarian so I'm actually for people being able to gamble, smoke pot and grow it in their basement, bonk who they want and pay a fee for it etc.but it's all disgusting and shouldn't be conducted by the state making money from it to run on.Don't they have their hands in every other pot to gather enough money to run a state on?

    like reading these posts..

A good point you made there is women in desperate times posing nude... As the economy gets worse you will see more and more of this and other desperate messures by people to get pieces of paper..(money)..

So basically I agree that gambling and other things we don't consider politically correct will be adopted for state revenue...

Nevada, of course, has no state income tax. It's generally a rather conservative state, fiscally, and the state budget will always be cut close to the bone. Nevada has been hit hard by the fall of the housing market. So, yes, the state government is having to cover a few hundred million dollar shortfall.

In thinking about how big this problem is, keep in mind that a few hundred million amounts to what the US will spend on the war in Iraq in less than 2 days.

The gambling industry in Nevada is thinning itself down, and that is affecting Nevada some. That has more to do with the Indian casinos in California than anything else.

Overall, though, don't worry about Nevada. The economy in Nevada is doing quite well. Lots of California businesses move there to get cheaper land, less traffic, better tax policies, and cheaper and more dependable energy. It's a bustling place, where a person can make a buck.
