An echeck uses the third party ACH system for transferring and takes several days until the payment is confirmed as the sending party can cancel.

A wire is bank to bank direct, is more like handing over cash that cant be reversed, is faster and attracts fees from the sending bank as well as sometimes the receiver and an intermediary along the way if the banks don't have direct agreements.

Its different in Canada. Wires need to be processed manually at the branch head office. EFT/ACH here are MUCH faster, usually overnight.

I'm pretty sure the Canadian EFT system is more like the Australian bank transfer setup than the US system, operated by private company Automated Clearing House.

But I can order a wire here from my online banking for $10 just as simply as doing a bank transfer. I've had them arrive to/from USA banks in 8 hours.
