You have not been sent a 'fake check', you have just been lumped with dealing with a teller who thinks there is nothing much outside US borders. It would clear if sent for collection as that department realizes there are other countries in the world with proper banking systems.
Just do what the book suggested... maybe even ask the teller directly to stamp it for you instead of trying to re-deposit.
