They have lots of money so maybe different than like Willy Hill??

Are you saying street sportsbook or a online sportsbook?
In some countries where bet are regulated I know that betfair is only alowed to be a sportbook and not a exchange, this means that players are only alowed to back bets and dont have access to the lay option.

They haven't yet launched their sportsbook in Australia so I haven't any experience of playing there.
I really wonder about their strategy and would have thought it far better that they concentrate on promoting the massive advantage of their point of difference as an exchange rather than try to become just another sportsbook offering nothing different.

Yes, but correctly promoted and handled I don't understand why the exchange shouldn't be their prime earner. They have close to a monopoly.

Higher margins on the book. I agree with you, they are turning their back on their completive advantage and what turned them into a £1bn company.

More profit in the conventional model - that was always the assumption. They've milked the exchange model for as much fees as they think they can manage without killing it, so now they try lever the advantage of the name brand into a new business.

close to a monopoly when it comes to their services, but when it comes to profits, I think the classic model bookmakers make more profits at the end of the year than pinnacle or betfair... so if they attract a lot of customers to the sportsbook, the exchange won't be their prime earner

Square books on the other hand have bigger juice and they also avoid sharps... and in the long run, squares just end up losing.

Square books don't take sharp action because their business is to end up with the money that losers lose.

I think that is the big difference that affects the balance sheets at the end of the year.

they are still miles ahead any other exchange and I don't think they are willing to let their advantage over the competition slip away easily

Just checking out matchbook (doubt i'd ever use them) and wanted to know how u see the volume on a match like you can with the little graph that betfair provides??? I don't see any other exchange giving u the option to see it.

They opened it for one reason, so they can take all the suckers money directly rather than having it go to a pro and having to take a commission on the exchange.

Plus, they already have everyones trading record so it's pretty easier to identify the soft and hard money.

Why won't they is the first question.

Second, there is very well a reason. Germany f.e. has the "Glücksspielstaatsvertrag", meaning that books have to pay 5% of every bet (EVERY bet, winner, loser, even cashback bets) as taxes to the state. Betfair obviously can't take the 5% because it's an exchange. So they blocked players from Germany from using the exchange. But obviously they can take the 5% in a normal sportsbook. So they have one. Easy as pie.

That with Germany is not the real reason. They want to have a sportsbook to earn as much money as they can. They want to raise their finacial records and to boost prices of their equities so they can sell their shares at juicy levels to some rich idiots. Sad but true, they dont care customers. They allow some bad moves at the exchanges to earn even 10 eur more from commisions imho, thats what i saw.
