What a week for Kansas City’s soccer fans, a group that appears to be bigger than previously thought.
An amazing 52,424 showed up at Arrowhead Stadium to watch the Wizards play the English giants, Manchester United, the world’s richest sporting club. And those fans were rewarded with an excellent game and a 2-1 home-team victory.
It was the largest American soccer crowd for a professional team game this year. But the good news didn’t stop there. Progress on the new Wizards stadium gave team officials confidence to start hawking season tickets for the place, expected to open next June. About 1,100 have been snapped up since Monday by fans who haven’t bought season tickets before.
Beyond that, U.S. soccer officials were impressed by the size and passion of the crowd at Arrowhead, a very encouraging boost for efforts to bring in future World Cup games.
The crowd surely helped cement Kansas City’s place in the U.S. bid for the 2018 and 2022 tournaments.
That’s a plateful of good news for soccer fans. Now if only Royals fans could experience something similar
