The old Rivalry continues. I am really looking forward to this matchup. Both teams have shown some weaknesses so far. The Germans look vulnerable in defence and the english look very weak in the midfield. The winner faces Arg or Mexico so we are likely to have another great game after this one. I see the Germans treading carefully here and looking to beat the english on the counterattack. England might have gotten there break by just getting thru and could now gain momentum but i never count out the Germans in soccer. On a personal note i will be cheering for Germany. Thoughts?

#3very very close game.. Im hoping England has snapp out of their zombie mode and play a great game vs the germans. I think England will take it. Its obvious now for capello that DeFoe was the right choice from the beggining and I would return with aaron lennon next match or use J cole instead, dont think james milner will do a good job vs the germans.Comment -

#5Going to be a great matchup. Starting lineups are very important, if Schweinsteiger is out that's a red light on Germany. If Heskey starts I won't hesitate to back Germany, it indicates that they're going route 1. I think Germany's lack of defense is over hyped, they only allowed one goal in the group stages, admittedly against weak teams. England haven't exactly been firing on all cylinders, Rooney is burnt out from the long season at Man U. Germany have played with conviction while England looked aimless throughout the group stages.
I'm surprised England are favourites to be honest, Germany are far far superior in midfield and retaining possession. If England send out a team to boot the ball up to Heskey they won't win, however if they try to keep the ball on the ground and move it around, they have a good chance.
It seems most people backing England are hoping they manage to flip a switch and hit form somehow, ignoring their awful performances of the group stage. Seems unlikely right now, but this is football. My money's on Germany barring significant injuries.Comment -

#8Well I just think the first 3 matches that England played was just to fool the others. Now everyone is thinking that they can't do anything against the Germans. We just saw around 20% what England is capable of. Germany is done. England will beat them big time. ( that is just my opinion I don't want anyone to put any big bets on England, because of me, but I will go big on them).Comment -

Tell me about it Kary. I was at wembley in 1996 when Southgate missed the pk in the semifinal at euro 1996. It wasnt a pretty scene outside after. Felt sorry for the german fans getting beat up. The German steel in penalty shoot outs is the stuff of legends.Comment -

#15Epic match up for sure. England with a lot to prove in this WC facing a young German team that hasn't been convincing but they've surprised people as they always do. It would be a coin flip to bet on the winner in this match up, but I think England has the experience and the hunger to get through.Comment -

#17No bro if England play to their potential they are the best midfield in the world. Gerrard has played well- Lampard just needs to step up--this is the best offensive midfield duo in the world. All Germany has is Schwine and Podolski they are mainly wing players, if you find a way to shut them down, then Germany's whole offense will fold.Cause Sleep is the Cousin of DeathComment -

If we take Spain in 2008 as an example, Silva, Initesta provided the width while Xavi was the deep lying play maker and Senna was the holding defensive midfielder which allowed the team more freedom to play more offensively, this is a well balanced midfield with the mixture of width, defence and creativity. If we contrast this with England, Gerrard on the left doesn't provide width, there is no play maker and i am not at all convinced with Barry as a holding midfielder. As seen in all the group games and matches before hand, England are easy to attack, a good team will exploit the vast spaces they leave to critical effect. Had Owen Hargreevs been fit to play, Englands midfield would be a much stronger propositionForward points to Karayilan, i am unable to receive SBR pointsComment -

Now if he played Carrick and if Beckham was available, it would be more balanced but this current midfield has some problems to say the least.
I'm not that impressed with the German team, they don't have world class players BUT Germany are a tournament team, it doesn't matter if its the best or worst German side on paper, when it comes to these big games they manage to have a psychological advantage.
Fading the Germans in the WC unless they are against a team that is simply world class and playing at their peak and even then its a risky business.Comment -

Kary, I don't agree. There isn't 2 offensive threats in the midfield like Gerrard and Lampard and its not even close. They may not play well together at times, but I'm not takling about that. WHo can you even compare them with? Xavi, Fabregas, Silva, Inesta midfield maybe? They play much better together but Gerrard is a better offensive player then all those guys, and has the ability to carry a team by himself for at least 1 match whereas those guys cannot do anything by themselves when needed.
Turkzz are you serious with Alonso? Please Gerrard had a mediocre season he's one of the best if not th ebest liverpool player of all time.Cause Sleep is the Cousin of DeathComment -

#27I know he does, but he always stretches out and plays on the wing when I see him play. He likes taking it to the edges and getting in iso situtations when he gets the chance. You don't agree?

Gerrard is good for club but different for country. Him and Lamps just dont mesh together. England managers have no choice but to start them both but if asked privately i would say they move one of them off the starting lineup. It makes no sense to have 2 identical players on the pitch in there position. IT has never worked for the english up to now but who knows it might next game. BTW Kenny Dalglish was the best player liverpool had. He was before your time.Comment -
