England, France, Italy, and Spain have played nine matches...
and have a grand total of ZERO wins. All the matches were against inferior opponents.

Holland is the only European side playing up to expectations.
Add Argentina if we're talking world soccer powers in general.

France and Italy were over rated coming in here. Doesn't excuse the poor results for some, but I think many were over estimating - especially France & Italy - and their abilities to suddenly turn it on when the world cup started. If you look at their results in friendly action in 2010, neither showed a whole lot. I reserve judgment on Spain. They still have a chance to recover and have the best talent of all these "powers" you named. England was also a little too highly thought of I think. The coaches in this tournament who know what they are doing are marking Rooney and challenging someone on England to step up and beat them. No one has yet.

France was flat out bad before the World Cup, but yeah, people were hoping they could get it back together.
Spain on the other hand, was dominating. In the last four years, their only loss had been to the US in the 2009 Confederations Cup. Now of course they can add the Switzerland one.
Spain is as talented as anyone. They and Brazil are on their own level. Argentina is close.
