Some people do need an abacus.

Many matches are handicapped in ½ and ¼ intervals; both of which eliminate the possibility of a push since no one can score a half- goal. Quarter (¼) handicaps split the bet between the two next closest ¼ intervals. For instance, a $1000 bet with a handicap of 1 ¾ is the same as betting $500 at 1 ½ and $500 at 2. With ¼ handicap bets, you can win and tie (win ½ of wager) or lose and tie (lose ½ wager). The ¼-goal handicap may be expressed by some bookmakers as "0 and ½", or (especially for bookmakers whose systems are designed for sports like American football and basketball (where bets have a handicap that is designed to make the odds as close to even as possible)) as "pk (for "pick-em") and ½".

That's a pretty clear explanation. Nonetheless, still so confusing... Thanks pronk.

Here's a simpler breakdown of what AH are available.

              - (minus) means you're giving a handicap
+ (plus) means you're getting a handicap - this is just like baseball/basketball etc.

              0 - Zero handicap, so it's basically a Draw/No Bet situation.

0/+-0.5 (aka +-1/4) - This is like a split bet - you have zero handicap and also + or - 1/2 goal. You bet $200, $100 will be at 0 and $100 will be for +/- 1/2 goal

+-0.5 - Pretty simple, you're giving or getting a 1/2 goal handicap. If you're -0.5, you need to win by at least 1 goal to cash, if it's a draw, you lose. With +0.5, you need at least a draw or your team to win. If the other team wins by at least 1 goal, you lose.

+-0.5/+-1 (aka +-3/4). Again, this is a split bet. You take -0.5/-1, in effect you're giving up 1/2 goal and 1 goal. If your team wins by 1 goal, you win half your bet - as you cash the 1/2 goal and you push the -1 goal handicap. To win the FULL bet, you need your team to win by at least 2 goals - so that it covers the 1/2 goal and 1 goal.

If you took +0.5/+1, you're getting that handicap. You either need a draw or your team to win. If the opposition wins by goal, you lose half the bet, which is the +0.5 and you push the +1. If the opposition wins by more than a goal (2+), then you lose the bet.

There's more handicaps available - obviously it'll be higher when you've got a shit team vs a good team.
