You guys really think Japan will knock out Paraguay? I dunno, but Japan to advance at +150 does look tasty...

#2383South American teams have been killing it at this tournament this year. We saw the first one eliminated yesterday only by another South American team. I'm backing Paraguay.

#2387I'm not fancying Spain today. I'm still on the fence regarding the game. Personally yes, I would like Spain to win but I don't think it's highly likely to happen. Spain's attack and defense have struggled this tournament while on the contrary, Portugal's defence is very strong though their attack is suspect. Which is why I think it'll be a battle in midfield and hence, wanted your opinion on it.Originally posted by lakerboysov i know you like spain so you dont need my opinion. how did englands midfield stack up with germany's?Comment -

in that case spain has to get ramos up on the wing to attack a portuguese defence excels at stopping the style spain brings as both xavi and iniesta like to move in the middle of the field towards the goal with out moving towards the outside and that plays into portugals hands as alves and carvalho will hold that action up. if spain refuses to change there idea of going thru the middle they will continue to get frsutrated. for me the key matchup is ramos versus coentrao. if spain dont go on the wings they will have lots of trouble scoring. as for the portuguese they have issues scoring but they have the best player on the field and he only needs one inch to make spain pay.Comment -

#2400Agree with that, which is why I'd like Del Bosque to start either of Juan Mata or David Silva. Give Spain some width to get at the Portuguese defence.Originally posted by lakerboyin that case spain has to get ramos up on the wing to attack a portuguese defence excels at stopping the style spain brings as both xavi and iniesta like to move in the middle of the field towards the goal with out moving towards the outside and that plays into portugals hands as alves and carvalho will hold that action up. if spain refuses to change there idea of going thru the middle they will continue to get frsutrated. for me the key matchup is ramos versus coentrao. if spain dont go on the wings they will have lots of trouble scoring. as for the portuguese they have issues scoring but they have the best player on the field and he only needs one inch to make spain pay.
If I was Queiroz, I'd start Simao on the right and Ronaldo on the left, to prevent the Spanish full-backs from bombing forward. Ramos goes out of position plenty of times and playing Ronaldo on the left (cutting on the inside, similar to Robben playing on the right) could be devastating.
Also, Del Bosque could be slightly cautious and do what Barcelona did to counter Ronaldo- play Puyol at RB. Or he could play Arbeloa who is a more defensive RB than Ramos.
Not leaning either way now. Will wait till the teams are put out and then decide. It should be a very tactical game and a treat to watch.Comment -

#2413You know what? I just found one thing that goes in Portugal's favour. Ref and linesmen are from Argentina. They might not want their country to play Spain.
