The raincloud of controversy surrounding the 2014 World Cup just got a bit darker.
Dailymail.co.uk is reporting at least two referees who have already worked World Cup games have been identified as strong suspects in the fixing of international matches prior to the tournament. The article states FIFA was not aware of these accusations until after the officials had been involved in World Cup matches. The identities of said referees have not been made public.
The Association responded to the accusations by saying "It is important to note that we have no indications that the integrity of the FIFA World Cup has been compromised", which is a less than satisfactory response that drastically skates over a bigger issue.
Four teams remain for the right to be crowned 2014 World Cup champions, but the play on the pitch continues to be overshadowed by allegations, corruption and controversy off of it - damaging FIFA's already sketchy reputation in the process.
