    Soccer comes to SBRlines.com
    Soccer comes to http://www.sbrodds.com/

Whether you call it football, fútbol or soccer, it's a beautiful (and profitable) game and the odds have been added to http://www.sbrodds.com/. Though the next FIFA World Cup is still more than a year away, there is plenty of action currently across the globe from the UEFA Champions League to the English Premier League where Didier Drogba and Chelsea are heavy favorites for their next match against Portsmouth.

You know the global village has become a reality when soccer is making inroads in the United States. Betting odds for the beautiful game are now available right here, and we couldn’t be happier. This happens to be the best time of year for soccer fans; we’re in the middle of the knockout stage (the highly competitive Round of 16) for the UEFA Champions League, the best quality soccer you’ll see outside the quadrennial Euro tournaments and the World Cup. Crunch time is also upon us in the top leagues across Europe – the English Premiership, Spain’s La Liga, and Italy’s Serie A among them.

In case you’re completely brand new to the concept, betting on soccer doesn’t require an advanced degree. All you need to do is accept the fact that there are a lot of draws in soccer, so many that they are included in the standard betting line. Here’s an example:

    Juventus +140
    Chelsea +185
    Draw +210

This is for the second leg of the Champions League series between Italy’s Juventus and the elite Chelsea squad from the Premiership. The match is on Tuesday, Mar. 10 at the Stadio Olimpico, the host site of the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin. The betting is simple: lay your money down on either a home win, an away win, or a draw. There are no pushes with this format.

The final score for betting purposes is almost always whatever the score is at the end of the regulation 90 minutes, plus injury time. Overtime periods (aka “extra” time) and shootouts do not count toward your bet in this format. Check the rules your book is using to make sure.

Again, this is the second leg of a two-game, total-goal series to decide who will move on to the quarterfinals in April. Playing at home is enough of an advantage that the first tiebreaker in the Champions League playoff system is away goals. Chelsea won the first leg 1-0 at home, so Juventus need at least a 1-0 score at the end of regulation to force extra time. If Juventus win 2-1, Chelsea automatically advance because of the away goal. So while Juventus will be pressing to score, they cannot completely abandon any defensive effort, lest Chelsea put one in the net and force the Italians to win by a two-goal margin to avoid elimination.

This is one of eight Champions League matchups on Mar. 10-11; others include Inter Milan at Manchester United and Real Madrid at Liverpool. It certainly helps when handicapping these games to have a sense of the styles each club plays. There isn’t a lot of technical information you can use, since the teams in question face each other on a fairly limited basis. If you’re a numbers person, you’ll find your niche more in the Premiership or Serie A games themselves.

The Premiership runs a schedule that is similar to college basketball: heavy on Saturdays, plenty of action on Wednesdays, and a smattering of contests in between. This Wednesday’s slate features Aston Villa at Manchester City and Wigan at West Ham. If you look at the home-away splits for these teams, Aston Villa are remarkably better away from historic Villa Park, winning 10 games with zero draws and three losses compared to 5-7-2 at home. That’s seven draws – the order of the records is win-draw-loss, as opposed to the more familiar win-loss-tie in North America’s major pro sports. Aston Villa have also outscored opponents 20-12 in away matches; at home, the margin shrinks to 20-15. These very basic and easily understood numbers will give shape to your betting choices.

Of course, we’d be remiss to leave out mention of the MLS. American (and Canadian) soccer is alive and well, even if the quality is sometimes lacking. That just means the lines will be softer – think of the MLS as the equivalent of betting on the mid-majors in college hoops. The regular season starts on Mar. 19 with the new Seattle Sounders hosting the New York Red Bulls on ESPN2.
