    Phinfan's Bar Poker Open thread

    Hey fellas

No casinos where I live and I don't have a lot of disposable income but I love playing NL Hold em so I recently looked up free live poker on google and saw there are a few leagues around where I live. Figured I'd post my first couple experiences here, use it to share new ones going forward and see if anyone has some good tips since I'm very new to playing live poker tourneys (SBR Poker has taught me bad habits lol but still would never stop playing)

First time playing last week I went to the Atlantic Poker tour game. I get there with my dad and check the place out, about 6 tables set up w stacks and lots of elephants already gorging themselves on the buffet. After we've ordered food the guy running the game says you have to buy the buffet to play and it's $25. I'm like whatever, already drove out here to play so I'll pay the $25 this time. When the game starts they leave the ghost stacks to be blinded out and there's 4 tables with about 7-8 players actually playing at each.

I played really tight at the start until got down to 3 tables because wasn't getting any hands and was just feeling it out. 3rd table I shoved w pocket 8s preflop after like 3 people had called the blind and get snap called by another short stacked dude w ak suited. Survived it, tell the guy good game and he shakes my hand then leaves. A few hands later I'm still pretty short stacked so I shove 77 and get called by 2 players 1 w kq another w a10. flop comes 444 then turn and river are non cards so I triple up.

Fast forward to the final table and I'm short stacked but not a couple people have less than me. Sitting just to the right of the button shuffling the cards I just dealt and I see I've got a pair of bullets. Another short stacker shoves ahead of me and gets called by another short stack but had some left. I shove all in and other stack mutters something under his breath in my direction and calls anyways putting him all in. short stack had kq and bigger short stack had queens. My aces held (never would've happened on sbr lol) and I sent both packing.

Fast forward to myself and 2 other players left. myself and other guy have the same stack basically and the 3rd has easily 5x what either of us have. This guy is decked out in poker logos gear and my read was that he'd been bullying his way through the final table. Now this is where the story gets interesting, I took his entire stack in a series of 4 hands all in a row. The other guy folded each of these hands preflop and several spectators all clearly weren't a fan of poker logo man and they were all getting a great laugh as these hands unfolded.

First hand, I'm on the small blind and not much left so shove a3 suited club and he calls w pocket queens and he was big blind. I flopped an ace and rivered the flush so doubled up.

Next hand I'm the button and I shove jq suited clubs and he calls w a10 offsuit. Flopped a queen, turn is an ace, river is a jack so now I'm feeling much better after majorly sucking out and staying alive. Now I can see it in his face this guy is pissed after that and rightfully so.

Next hand I'm the big blind w a3 and the guy calls from the button, I decide to check the option and flop comes a23. I'm thinking if I bet he folds now but I bet I can trick him into taking a stab bc i know he doesn't have 45 or he wouldn't have called from the button. He checks, turn comes a nonfactor and I check again. He looks at me and proceeds to string bet me by slowly dropping chips 1 at a time then reaches back for more and throws a couple more in. In a joking manner I asked "Isn't that a string bet?" but was like it's fine though and the guy running the game tells him it was close and to be careful. Guy is now red in the face and looks at me and says "That's a call bet, boy."
I chuckle and say well in that case I'm all in then. People in the crowd and the other guy are losing it laughing because this guy was not at all expecting this. He takes a minute and angrily folds his hand and says I looked relieved to see him fold.

Next hand I call from small blind w q10 suited (all of these suited hands at final table were clubs) and he shoves on top of his BB and I snap call. He shows q4 offsuit and puts his hands on his head when he sees my q10 suited. My kicker played and he tells me gg and storms off.

Final hand I've got 5x more than the other guy and he goes all in w a3 offsuit and ive got 97 suited clubs so i call and catch 2p on the final hand.

After all this, the first place prize was only $70 (2nd got $30 and 3rd got a free ticket for next weeks buffet), so between food and beers I cleared like $20. it was better than nothing, but it was clearly a ripoff since 30 some people payed $25 for the buffet to play. After that overall experience I decided I am not going to go back or play in that league mostly bc of the $25 buffet fee and low prize.

Last night I decided to try another league called the Kontender and it was a great experience but didn't a lot of players and the chips and cards were very beat up. They had 2 games and the first game I finished 2nd out of 9 and we each were down to 1 small blind left when it was 1v1 and kept clawing back on each other for like 30 minuted until I finally busted out. Second place got $5 off bar tab which was nice since it was free to play. The second game I busted out w about 10 left out of 18 when I had been playing tight and had a4 suited when flop was a22. I thought a big stack was trying to bluff me when they shoved on the flop so I called and they showed 92 and sent me packing.

Overall it was a lot of fun, bar had decent and cheap food and drinks and it was free to play w the possibility of winning BPO tokens and $$ off your tab. The other nice thing about this league was that they have them at different bars almost every day and often a 7 and 930 game so you can play twice. I plan on going back to play tonight and watch the nba game. Small amount of betpoints on warriors -4.5 because they might give cleveland the game so they can gentlemen's sweep them and clinch in game 5 at home. I know this was a long post and don't expect many to read it, but I thought it'd be a cool idea to document my experiences in this thread and see if anyone has any input.

I set up a PPPoker game on the phone(its an app) and me and all my old buddies from high school play together once or twice a week. Its a play money app but you send out coins in exchange for cash and you can choose the game, buy in, rake etc. You can then turn the coins in for cash so it's basically a real money game. 10 coins is $10 etc.

We usually do 10c-20c cash game once during the week and a $10 tournament with 1 rebuy and an addon every Saturday night or Sunday night. It's fun. Maybe set something up for yourself and friends and you can build up a community. Any rake I take in I give back once a month in a freeroll I set up. I think I took in like $50 the last two months but I give it all back in a freeroll tournament.

Thanks for the info, I prefer to play live but if I ever want to play online for money I'll check it out. I like the idea of it being with friends because I wouldn't ever play online for money otherwise due to the collusion risk

First game last night first hand I had ka and called the blind, big blind raises and i reraise and he shoves so I call and he turns over jq offsuit. we both flop a pair and he caught 2p on the river and celebrates. This guy pissed me off he looked like a character from duck dynasty but I try to be a good sport so I smiled and said nice hand and went over to the bar to cool down before returning to spectate and he literally busted out like 1 hand after the first break.

Second game didn't have any real memorable hands just played tight and started shoving high cards when the blinds got bigger, was down to 1 bb w 3 people left and my 84 caught an 8 and tripled me up and I went on to win. Playing 2 games again tonight. So far am loving the league made a few friends there as well. Taking one of my buddies who doesn't play tonight so he can learn because he wants to start playing.

That juice is pretty horrible though. I think you made the right move by playing elsewhere. GL!

    Thanks guys, played twice tonight.

First game couldn't catch many hands so limped all the way to 6th out of about 30 players.

Second game first hand I'm first action w kk, call the blind, someone raises so I just shove (only 20 players this time) and she calls and shows aa. Another fun night though

Props on the win, phin. I have read various poker books. Phil Gordon talks about it being a young man's game. In that regard, I think you have an advantage over me + many other SBR players. You can continue to hone your craft.

I believe the BEST poker player is the most prepared player. There is no spot where they're caught off guard or less educated than they should be.

Been playing out in Vegas L2 weeks. First off, I'll say that MY play hasn't been the best. But I really haven't been over-whelmed by the competition. Main observation is that I'm amazed at how wide some players play. Wide starting ranges mean that player will make a nutted hand less often.

Nice man! I hope to go play some tourneys in vegas or ac once I get older and more experienced. I'm still trying to work on not playing too wide a range of hands as well as making the right reads and considering the position.

Experience is a good teacher. In tournaments, you see it all.

If you ever get to the point that you want to play some tournaments in your region (or in Vegas)...let me know + I'll hook u up.

Played a few times this week but only one table each time, couple times was only 4 or 5 players because most of the people are in vegas playing in a tourney. Nothing exciting from that, I'm planning on playing tonight hopefully there will be more players

Played Friday night and busted out early 2pair against a straight first time then second game I shoved pocket kings at the final table and got called by pocket 3s and a 3 came up on the flop. Dumb call by me first game second just got unlucky. Going forward will probably only play on weekends since starting my job tomorrow but may go play this evening still thinking about it

Damn, that blows. You win some u lose some. The key is not gambling with things u can't afford to lose, bro. Plus my kids take what little cash I make. Ha. But I will make u a little pretend wager since I have no crypto currency. I bet you will get everything you have coming to you and more sugar. And if Rhonda Rousey ever fights Mayweather trust that bitch will win because she has heart and her love of fighting is her reason to get up every day....punk Mayweather is just a egomaniac who is driven by his aging hit or miss rooster, and his love of money and fame. Peace out. McGregor is a beast tho. He can't be tko I bet if someone slipped narcotics into his diet .

You need to find another game in the area with a bit higher buy in. Need to keep moving up.

Are you coming to the bash?

SBR poker tourney there and for sure a few of us are going to play others too.

Good read here Phin, how old are you? Your passion for the game is energizing. I know you mentioned there are no brick n' mortar casinos near you but if a site like BetOnline is available in your state you should look into it. They have low buy-in tournaments that would suit you perfectly. Keep grinding pal

Thanks sweeper, I’m 26 (worked at a call center for a couple years after college then took 2 years for a master’s which is why this is my first real job).

Opti I have a car and student loans to pay off so don’t mind playing for free, in a couple years I’m sure we’ll have casinos here in NC and I’ll be able to gamble without feeling guilty about it having put a dent in the debt I’ve accumulated haha. Plus I just don’t like the feel of online poker compared to live wouldn’t really want to put money into online. Maybe here and there I’ll play some local cash games if I’m feeling lucky.

Thanks for the support fellas, we have a great community for poker here at sbr other than a few who make us all look bad

Sounds like he was trying to bully w 4 pocket pairs in a row and played them all like a donk and got tilted! lolol

Friday night I got pretty drunk and won the first game. Key hand w 6 people left me and another guy all in preflop each w aq, 2 more people all in preflop as well one had qq other had pocket 10s. last guy folding shows he folded a7 so theres only one card in the deck to catch for us and the ace came on the river was so funny haha. Also this alcoholic guy was sb earlier w multiple tables left and he called with a bigger chip then the bb shoved so he folded and tried to say he didnt call the blind. A couple people start arguing with him about it so since I'm the dealer that hand I put my foot down and said look buddy its free poker we all heard you call the blind so here's the correct change. He got mad and called me an idiot so I told him don't be a jackass you're way out of line here so he cursed me out threw his chips at me and got up and left. Overall another fun night busted out second game.

Last night played twice and shoving kk once again backfired early when someone had raised the blind and they called my shove w aces. Second game 5 people left i shove my short stack w k4 suited get 2 callers one had jq off one had 105 off and the guy w 10 5 rivered a straight when I would've won the hand haha had to laugh bc it was the guy who had 1010 in the big hand the night before.

3 games tonight plan on playing first 2 maybe the 3rd too

Great news this week fellas - found out I passed 2 more cpa exams and find out about the fourth and final tomorrow, if I passed then I will be a CPA next summer once my first year of work is complete.

Played sbr poker a couple times and shoved ka early to have it beaten by 55 and aa. Not in contention for wc qualifying anyways so don't really care just playing for fun when I have the time/energy after work at the 8pm games.

Super excited to play bar poker this weekend.

Had a great win sunday where I was beaten in hands by quad 6s over my aj 2p, someone called my kk shove w aa and it held for the 4th time in 2 weeks, and i was beaten by a straight flush as well. Fortunately I had big stacks on all those hands and easily covered the people who beat me and I end up flopping quad aces w 4 people left when I had pocket aces and won the tourney. Best hand I've ever had live and another win felt great. Super stoked to play this weekend and do some drinking while I play tomorrow night

Thanks chucky. I've got 15 poker points to rollover looking to shove them all in blind twice if you'd like to gamble

Thanks guys! Couldn’t find a cash game but got invited to a $100+20 knockout tourney tonight but can’t go bc have a friends bday party. Going to go drink and watch the World Cup game this afternoon and maybe play the free games beforehand. Last night got too drunk and played like crap busted out real early both times haha
