Is compulsive gambling a form of
sexual repression? I've heard this theory before and looking at some compulsive gamblers I could say that there is some truth behind it.

I could make the argument that gamblers are more into thing like sex, drinking, drugs, etc....addictive behaviors in all forms.

a few decades back there was the "addictive personality disorder" in the DSM....

I think there is somthing inbedded in genetic code or in their personal history to make some humans seek out HIGH highs...at the expensive of low lows...

I'm not too much into freud and sexual repression stuff, as Freud was way more of a deviant in so many ways....except maybe for Nicky and JJ.... that his theories are kinda wack.

Sex and gambling result in the same chemical, dopamine, being released to the brain.

ALOT of things result in the "same" neuro's being released in the brain... can't create a correlation by those alone

Serious question Boner, I have asked my buddies about this, and we are too lazy to look up the answer:

Is the dopamine response the same with the following 3 types of sex:

                1. Loving sex with a wife or girlfriend.

                2. Sex with a hooker.

                3. Masturbation.

                Anyone know?

great question slick.... that gets more to the issue..

off hand, i would have to believe that "loving" sex would have more of an increase in serotonin, and some with masturbation and not much with a hooker....

not having had sex with a hooker, that leads me to ask, do you still wanna eat/sleep after sex with a hooker..or do you feel MORE awake/alive...

or how do you feel after RISKY sex with a partner? sex in a public place ect.

that may correlate more positively to gambling..

Compulsive gambling is a form of wanting to make money.

Thats all it comes down to in some cases. A way to earn money, in a very entertaining/easy fashion. Whether someone is good or bad at it, is a different story.

maybe at the root is "WANT" of money.....

but what separates someone who gambles on sports or casinos from someone who plays the lotto every day all their life, or plays bingo every wednesday/

I think the key in the original questions is the WANT of somthing... that is the connection.

I mean who doesn't want more money? but at what risk?

so what separates the avg joe, who works harder, get promoations, save, invest, get more hours.... vs the guy who just wants to plunk a hard earned dime of $ on the thursday night college fb home dog?

the question was about compulsive behavior..

and many people want more money, but when they start to lose as most gamblers will and do..

If they are not compulsive, they will quit. the "compulsion" is what drives people to keep betting in the face of evidence that this will fail to make money.
