To a more pertinent question since it's in many more people's price range: why does the new IPAD cost 12,300 points when it's worth $500? One could buy $500 worth of Best Buy gift cards for cheaper (11,680 points) or something similar to the same effect making it kind of strange that the ipad would be sold as a separate item for an increased cost compared to the other method...

Personally I really liked the original price a lot more (as I'm sure others did too )

figure it this way 48720 points / 1168 (cost of a $50 gift card) = 41.7 cards. 41.7 *$50 =$2,085 now factor in we offer one price to all members, we must take into account a # of factors, including S&H, taxes, and delivery worldwide.
So $86 is not that bad of a price difference.

As for the iPad I am no longer able to get them direct from Apple so having to use a 3rd party they are a bit more expensive.
