Is it allowed? I guess so, I mean, it's tough for us to catch everything that someone is trying to pass off as their own. Do I like it? No, and in fact once I know someone is doing it that person or poster has zilcho credibility with me. Not that they care, I'm sure, because if they cared then they wouldn't be such an ass and pass of someone else's work as their own.

Is plagiarizing allowed at SBR?
Just thought this original topic was relevant. Any thoughts.

It shouldn't be too much of a surprise that the Internet has evolved into a force strong enough to reflect the greatest hopes and fears of those who use it. After all, it was designed to withstand nuclear war, not just the puny huffs and puffs of politicians and religious fanatics.

I've got to throw in with Uncle Richie on this one. I've found that credibility is a fragile thing that takes a big back seat to having a shiny semi-automatic.

It's from CNN...gives immediate credit to them...that's what (CNN) means..... Go there and view it directly if you'd like....

In my profession plagiarism is a form of flattery. People don't really bother to get patents anymore, unless it is a really good one, because companies will put people on the case to redesign a product and alter just enough to get over on the patent rights. Plus it cost a bundle to get one and defend one.
Its about numbers here, who cares where story came from. I thought Richie wrote it anyway and that is what matters.

really you're supposed to link to everything you post that's not your own creation, if we're going to be strict about this.

A link.
The whole idea is that CNN.com or any other website wants the traffic associated with their stories. They don't want someone to read it on sbr forums and not visit their site. They want you to post part of the story (the lead paragraph or a summary) with a link, so that people will follow the link and visit their website.
Attribution is only part of it. Websites can get in legal trouble if people are regularly taking information from other sites without linking. Usually nothing happens, but one website/forum I frequent had that problem and had to mandate a certain style for everyone posting stories so that they're properly attributed and linked.
