I remember the days when he was in Toronto and everyone bitched about him constantly. "Stand Pat" they called him, because he went through a stretch where he wasn't making many deals.

Turns out he was just smarter than everyone else and he wasn't prone to panicking and knee-jerking. He only made deals when they were good deals.

Following the rise of the Blue Jays from nothing to their 2 World Series was one of the biggest sports-related thrills of my life. It almost makes me weepy and nostalgic for those carefree days when I actually gave a crap and had favorite teams.

Gillick deserves more credit for that success than anyone. And he has gone on to other organizations and proved it wasn't a fluke. Smart and classy guy.
