I ref soccer at plenty of tournaments in Michigan. Every tournament is always booked full for all age groups U12 -> mens/ladies. The youth games the parents don't seem to know or understand the game that well but are all really nice and completely respectful. It's the current generation that is giving popularity to soccer in the US.

Look at MLS numbers and the growth and tell me soccer is not growing huge in the us, the mls is up 8.6% from average attendance last season (MLS league-wide attendance this season after 213 games is 18,814, an 8.6 percent increase over the average of 17,295 after Week 22 in 2011)
Look at the numbers when big teams from other countries come and play in the us.

Just because sportscenter doesn't cover it doesn't mean it's not big.
