By February 1967, some newspapers were questioning George Romney's eligibility given his Mexican birth. In May 1967, the Democratic chair of the House Judiciary Committee, Emanuel Celler, said he had "serious doubts" about whether Romney was eligible, but had no plans to formally challenge the matter. Another member of Congress made a case against Romney the following month. In response, the New York Law Journal published an article by a senior attorney at Sullivan & Cromwell arguing that Romney was, in fact, eligible. The Congressional Research Service also came down on Romney's side, as did most other constitutional experts at the time.

During the campaign, Romney was generally considered a viable and legal candidate for United States president. He departed the race before the matter could be more definitively resolved, although the preponderance of opinion since then has been that he was eligible.

It was already proven that a birth certificate issue isn't gonna cost you the Presidency. So, this year they are trying to bring up the tax returns instead.

His grandpop was a polygamist who fled to Mexico to escape the United States prohibitions against their holy lifestyles... So while Mitt's daddy was born in a polygamist colony in Mexico shortly after he father's birth the whole group was forced to flee back to the United States because of the Mexican Revolution...

So, yes, while Mitt was born in the United States (and therefore eligible to be president) the reason he is now able run (and not in Mexico with his multiply wives) is because his family a generation before was forced to return back here to live among us sinners in Gomorrah and thus give up their biblical practices because of fear of the fighting in their adopted more tolerant country...
