The Marlins intend to place Carlos Lee on waivers if they are unable to trade him by Tuesday's deadline.

Miami will try desperately to move Lee in the next few hours before that happens. Acquired by the Marlins earlier this month, Lee has hit .271/.388/.343 with a homer and 12 RBI over 21 games in South Beach. He'll be a free agent after the season.

According to Scott Miller of CBSSports.com, the Reds are talking the Twins about a trade for outfielder Denard Span.

Span would certainly satisfy their need for a leadoff hitter, as he has a quality .285/.360/.388 batting line. However, the Twins will likely want something significant in return, as the 28-year-old outfielder is under contract for $4.75 million next season, $6.5 million in 2014 and has a $9 million club option (or $500,000 buyout) for 2015. One source tells Miller that the deal has a "50/50" chance of going down.

D'Backs Trying To Acquire Ace Pitcher

By Tim Dierkes [July 31 at 12:58pm CST]
12:58pm: Lefty Patrick Corbin has been scratched from his start for Arizona's Triple-A affiliate, tweets Chris Gabel of the Reno Gazette-Journal. Magruder has been told Corbin will not be moved, but says he guesses things could change in what Kevin Towers likes to call the "lightning round."
12:46pm: The Diamondbacks are not currently discussing a deal with the Cubs involving Upton and Garza, reports MLB.com's Steve Gilbert. It was only Olney's speculation in the first place.

                        Latest On Orioles, Joe Blanton

By Tim Dierkes [July 31 at 12:45pm CST]
31-year-old innings eater Joe Blanton has about $3MM left on his contract, and the Orioles are his most interested suitor. The latest:
                        • The Phillies are coming off the $3MM demands, tweets Connolly, and Blanton to the Orioles is picking up steam again.
                        • The Orioles would have to take on $3MM to acquire Blanton, and they aren't comfortable with that amount, so they're considering other options, Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun reports (all Twitter links). The Mariners want a lot in return for Jason Vargas, Connolly writes. Joe Saunders and Bud Norris are alternatives, but it's not clear whether they're fits for Baltimore. The Orioles don't want to give up much in a trade for starting pitching, Connolly writes.
                        • The Orioles tried to get Paul Maholm from the Cubs, Ghiroli reports. She confirms the team's interest in Saunders and Vargas. The Orioles are looking on the relief market as well, Ghiroli reports.

                              Matt Garza Rumors

The trade deadline is roughly eight hours away, and we learned yesterday that the Cubs are talking Matt Garza with multiple clubs despite a fluid buildup in the righty's triceps that will keep him from pitching until after the deadline passes. The 28-year-old is under team control for 2013, a season for which he will earn approximately $12.1MM, according to MLBTR contributor Matt Swartz. The Cubs moved Paul Maholm, Reed Johnson, and Geovany Soto on Monday; here's the latest on Garza.

                                Rangers, Twins Discussing Jared Burton

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [July 31 at 1:08pm CST]
The Rangers and Twins are discussing a possible trade involving right-handed reliever Jared Burton, Yahoo's Tim Brownreports (on Twitter). The Rangers are known to be considering additions to their bullpen.
Burton, 31, has a 2.40 ERA with 7.8 K/9 and 2.2 BB/9 in 41 1/3 innings for the Twins this year. He's earning a salary of $750K and will go to arbitration this coming offseason before hitting free agency after 2013.

The Yankees and Cubs have discussed a trade involving Ryan Dempster, and the veteran starter has told Chicago he would accept a trade to New York.

Dempster is also on record as saying he'll accept a deal to the Dodgers. While that swap seemed like a foregone conclusion as recently as yesterday, Los Angeles appears to be dragging its heels on what prospects it will surrender in a swap. At this point, its possible that Theo Epstein and company are trying to use the Yankees and other clubs as leverage against the Dodgers. Resolution is coming.

Ryan Dempster willing to go to LAD, NYY, TEX

Ryan Dempster told Bruce Levine of ESPN Chicago that he is willing to accept deals to the Dodgers, Yankees and Rangers.

This confirms a report by David Kaplan of CSNChicago.com. Jack Curry of YES Network reports that the Yankees haven't been told that Dempster would waive his no-trade clause to come to New York, but that could just a formality. It seems Theo Epstein and company finally have the leverage they need in trade talks with the Dodgers.

D-Backs trade LHP Breslow to Red Sox

Jack Magruder of FOX Sports Arizona confirms that the Diamondbacks have traded left-hander Craig Breslow to the Red Sox for outfielder Scott Podsednik and right-hander Matt Albers.

It's a pretty nice get for the Red Sox, as Podsednik and Albers were mostly spare parts. Breslow has a 2.70 ERA and 42/13 K/BB ratio over 43 1/3 innings this year and should fit nicely as a left-handed specialist. The deal could pay big dividends if hard-throwing left-hander Franklin Morales moves back into the Red Sox rotation.

The Pirates have acquired first baseman Gaby Sanchez from the Marlins for outfielder Gorkys Hernandez and a competitive balance pick, tweets Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.

Sanchez, 28, posted a .202/.250/.306 batting line in 196 plate appearances with Miami this year, and they optioned him to the minor leagues. He hit 19 homers in 2010 and 2011 and entered the 2012 season with a career batting line of .269/.346/.440.
The Marlins are tentatively going to obtain the 33rd overall pick in the draft from Pittsburgh, Jim Callis of Baseball America reports (on Twitter). MLB recommended a bonus of $1.525MM for the 33rd overall selection this year.

                                            Tigers, Cubs Discussing Alfonso Soriano

By Tim Dierkes [July 31 at 2:04pm CST]
2:04pm: The Tigers and Cubs are hard at work on Soriano, tweets David Kaplan of CSNChicago.com, but he's not sure if they can make the money work. Soriano is owed $42.3MM through 2014.
1:18pm: Manager Jim Leyland thinks the Tigers may be done on the trade front, tweets Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe.
10:57am: The Tigers have considered Alfonso Soriano, but don't think he's a great fit, Knobler reports (on Twitter). They asked about Scott Hairston, but the Mets wanted one of the Tigers' top five prospects in return.
10:24am: The Tigers are seeking a middle-of-the-order hitter in the wake of discouraging news on Victor Martinez's recovery from knee surgery, writes Danny Knobler of CBS Sports. Martinez is said to be 50-50 to return this year, so the Tigers are "looking hard" for another bat.

Twins OF Denard Span rejects move to Cincy

According to MLB Network, Twins outfielder Denard Span has rejected a trade to the Reds.

Span was drafted by the Twins in 2002 and hasn't played for a different organization, so he's turning down a shot at a postseason spot for comfort. The 28-year-old is under contract with the Twins through 2014 and carries a $9 million club option for 2015. H'es batting .285/.360/.388 this year.
