Anyone who follows things at imdb.com has seen some interesting activity in recent times regarding this question of best movie ever.

For the longest time the top 3 movies were

      Godfather
      Godfather II
      Shawshank Redemption

(I may have 2 and 3 reversed but anyway)

So The Dark Knight comes along and its following of extreme fanboys wanted it to be #1. So they bombarded it with 10 votes - and also bombarded the others with 1 votes (because rankings are based on member voting).

And they succeeded - for awhile. The Dark Knight was #1 for a good stretch. The Godfather got the worst of it and got knocked behind Shawshank.

Long story short, TDK has slowly settled into the 4th spot. But all the unbalanced manipulation attempts caused Shawshank to leapfrog into #1 where it remains. It is followed by Godfather and Godfather 2.

Man there has been a lot of bickering and whining on the message boards over there since the TDK came out and the fanboys came to life.

Here are just a few directors and flicks I really dig: Lars von Trier, Kurosawa, Apocalypse Now, The 400 Blows, The Bicycle Thief, There Will Be Blood (best in the last decade or so), Aronofsky, Inarritu (Amores Perros especially), Indiana Jones 3 (best adventure film of all time? probably.), A Clockwork Orange, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Grave of the Fireflies, City of God

I've tried to mix in Indie stuff, foreign stuff, American stuff, old stuff, new stuff, adventure, drama, everything. Just a list in no particular order.

wow, I guess everybody has their own net sh!t huh. I can't call them crazy cause hell they'ld call us crazy for posting here feverishly. Maybe sbr poster could orchestrate something like that, maybe go into another non gamblin forum and power post for a day talking back and forth between us.

imdb has its own vibe in terms of posting. It can be good and it can be every bit as stupid as some of the stuff that happens here.

But somehow their list of top movies, despite the fact it comes from votes on a public forum, has always been reasonably good.

FWIW, I'll copy the top 100 here. People should note that many of them are listed in the original languages (ex - #5 is better known here as The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. #13 is The Seven Samurai etc.):

Eh, I liked both a lot. There are definably more outrageous ones. Shakespeare in Love over anything. Dances With Wolves over Goodfellas.

Rocky over Taxi Driver, Network, and All the President's Men.

That movie annoys me. The Dark Knight was good, but the fourth best of all time is absolutely ridiculous.

I liked it fine but things went overboard with the comic book nerd crowd at imdb.

But I guess they are more internet-oriented than the Godfather crowd and, almost by definition, they don't have much of a life so they had lots of time to focus on manipulating this list on a website - and they got some results. It was #1 for quite awhile.

I don't know if it will drop below 4. It very well might.

Good to see 12 Angry Men still up there on the list. One of the greatest films ever made.

One of the movies Ive watched since I was a little kid was Backdraft...Not too many people have heard of it but none the less one of my favs.

Braveheart, Drumline and Changing lanes are just to name a few others.

Interesting read. I thought I liked the movie but after reading that, I'm not so sure. There weren't many points you made on the "con" side that I didn't agree with.

Actually I kind of want to see it again with more focus. I went with a date and I was constantly distracted by doubt and concern that I had dragged her out to something she wasn't enjoying. (That turned out to be true).

(btw - sorry if I'm being a know-it-all smarty-pants but The Scream was by Munch.)

Dark Knight was mediocre, shouldn't be anywhere near the top 500, let alone the top 10. I quite liked Batman Begins though.

Yeah, the Dark Knight would probably be #4 on my list of best Christopher Nolan movies.

Top 4 all-around movie of all time?
