The only way for Joe the Plumber to be legal is if he is supervised and be always in the company of Al Newell when he does plumbing. If for example Al Newell sends Joe the Plumber to a house to work on plumbing and Joe does the work on his own but claims Al Newell is licensed they could both be fined by the city of Toledo for violating Al Newell's plumbing license and face hefty fines or revocation of the plumbing license. This is a very serious matter and the law is very strict and precise on what work is allowed to be performed by a licensed plumber in which in Joe's case since he is not licensed is very limited.

Mr. Newell is on that list. And if I read the rules of apprenticeship correctly , the reported date of November 2003 as the date of filing of Joe's apprenticeship papers seems to be just fine.

"He has no license in the state of Ohio. He has no contractor's license in the state of Ohio. He is not a plumber. He works for a plumber."

What about Wurzelbacher's claim that he is "gettin' ready to buy a company that makes about two hundred and fifty, two hundred and seventy, two hundred and eighty thousand dollars a year" ... ? Wurzelbacher told reporters that when he was hired by Newell six years ago "the possibility of him eventually buying the company was discussed during his job interview."

According to Joseph, Newell Plumbing & Heating is far from a $250K-a-year operation. Newell is running "a two-man shop," he said. "This is not a thriving business."

Isn't there a chance it could be worth $250K? "Oh, God no," Joseph said. "Maybe if he sells him the house, the garage." He explained that the address for the business "is where the man lives at."

"The real Joe Plumbers are for Barack," Joseph added.

I don't think he's a "plant". This whole Joe dialog has made the GOP look worse in the end, IMHO. Guys like Rove would've investigated Joe's baggage before planting a guy like this. I think Joe is just a regular guy that leans towards the right, who had a fairly unintelligent question based on Republican rhetoric he probably listens to via guys like Andrew Wilkow on the radio. I also listen to Andrew Wilko, who is very intelligent and makes strong points, but his right-wing rhetoric is so thick you could cut it with a knife. Joe got wrapped up in the "Obama will raise taxes" rhetoric, not realizing that it doesn't apply to him in particular.

The bottom line is that Joe doesn't understand that he can't make a net profit of over 250k/year as a plumber. Although McCain did get a lot of mileage out of Joe in the debate, for which Joe probably deserves at least a 250k windfall from McCain for all of the free advertising before/during/after the debate. Maybe that's what Joe was really wondering about. Then again, his windfall probably will be handed to him under the table & tax free anyway, so his question again becomes irrelevant at least to him.
