    Phillies Downtime
The Phillies won't play another game until Wednesday. How will this layoff effect them?

great question..... rest is great in october... I mean these guys have been at it since late feb, early march when you think about it right?..... but that is toooooo much time away from playing high level real games right?

I think it is one of those BIG factors that people use in their Capping or "philosophy" picks like USCkingfan likes to call em..... that really can go EITHER way... it could be a good thing OR a bad thing. each individual and individual team could react differently to this? well rested or stale?

each individual handicapper is gonna view this differently... i've yet to see any trends on long layoffs for teams that seem relevant.

as for me, i tend to view rest as a GREAT thing and BIG advantage.... especially over a 7 game series. Where it doesn't take too long to shake of long layoff cobwebs. I think if you've ever competed at a semi-high level of sports above high school, where longer seasons wear on a non-teenage or even 20-somthing body..... rest, recuperation, rejuventation FAR outway layoff time..

When the starting lineups are made on national tv, and the national anthem is being played mins before game 1 of the 2008 world series is playing and your body isn't pumping more adrenaline then ever before...YOU ARE MISSING SOMTHING and shouldn't be blessed with the gifts to play professional sports.

all that said, I still like the youth of the Rays to win if they make to the WS

It's the price MLB pays for kowtowing to the networks on the playoff schedule. Not to mention if the Rays take the ALCS tonight, you're letting your viewing audience go too long before the start of the Series, and by next Wednesday a lot of casual viewers will have forgotten all about baseball still being on the schedule.

It can't help the Phils. Last year, the long layoff cooled off the red-hot Rockies.
