Jean Guy Tremblay:

Jean Guy Tremblay is a violent man.
Oh, pardon. That would be John Tremblay because he no longer likes the double-barrelled Jean Guy, as his lawyer pointed out in court yesterday.
Yet Jean Guy Tremblay is how the felon has been known to an array of Canadian courts – and is thus still identified in all formal documents, which now fill several legal boxes, including 5,000 pages of transcripts.
But Tremblay is a pathologically controlling man and in this detail, at least, he has been satisfied: John.
In 1989, Tremblay tried to prevent his former girlfriend from obtaining an abortion.
That case went all the way to the Supreme Court. In the years since, he has repeatedly pounded on women, unlawfully confined women, frightened women, threatened women, criminally harassed women and imposed his alarming attentions on women.
It is a sad commentary, however, that some females have responded favourably to the 6-foot-3 jerk, now gone middle-aged salt-and-pepper, to the extent that at least one shacked up romantically with Tremblay after knowing him for only two weeks and another moved in to share his apartment – platonically – on the day they met.
Both those women later brought a slew of charges against him in Alberta.
The dispute over his Christian name yesterday came not long after Tremblay had hissed his objections while Crown Attorney Rita Zaied was reciting a long list of previous convictions into the record. Tremblay was most agitated when Zaied got to a 69-year-old victim of assault causing bodily harm.
"This has to stop!" Tremblay protested, wagging his finger and summoning defence counsel Sid Freeman for a heated conversation.
"Now isn't the time for this," she shushed back.
Last October, before Madam Justice Andromache Karakatsanis, Tremblay was found guilty of criminally harassing a 32-year-old woman who was running a used car dealership in Toronto with her husband. Karakatsanis acquitted Tremblay on a second charge of failing to comply with special conditions imposed by an earlier long-term offender order that required him to "immediately report any relationship entered into with females" to his parole supervisor.
The crown wants Tremblay declared a "dangerous offender'' – a more severe designation than long-term offender – by which he could be kept in prison indefinitely.
The sentencing hearing has turned into a more protracted legal affair as a dangerous offender application.
"Mr. Tremblay is not an exclusive domestic violent abuser but a predator," Zaied told the court; someone who's tyrannized landladies, female co-workers and lovers.
"He is not just a danger to intimate partners but he is a danger to women in general.''
This is a second bid at trussing up Tremblay as a dangerous offender. A Calgary judge declined to do so in 2000, despite 14 assault convictions at that time.
That judge did invoke the long-term offender status, with its exceptional conditions.
At that court proceeding, five women came forward to offer similar fact evidence about Tremblay's abusive and controlling nature.
While Tremblay was not charged criminally in any of those instances, the judge ruled that the women's testimony (apart from one allegation of sexual assault) was admissible in the matter before the court.
Four psychiatric experts at that trial testified Tremblay was at high risk to reoffend, describing him variously as a psychopath, narcissistic, paranoid, aggressive and predatory.
There was disagreement on the usefulness of treatment.
In any event, as court heard yesterday, Tremblay has steadfastly refused to participate in psychological counselling while in prison, purportedly on the advice of lawyers – he's gone through a half dozen – and in the midst of appeals.
"He refused all treatment because he said that would be tantamount to admitting wrongdoing," said Richard Marceau, a Corrections Services supervisor testifying for the fourth time against Tremblay.
The serial abuser has never shown remorse, Marceau added, nor acknowledged mistreatment of women, and has repeatedly projected blame for his conduct onto others.
At this trial, the concept of "relationships" had to be addressed on the second count – whether he had contravened his parole conditions.
Karakatsanis found there was no relationship – defined as a mutual connectedness between two people, whether romantic or not – happening during the five days Tremblay hung around the car dealership last February, sometimes for hours, once for the entire day, at one point phoning the woman at home to inquire why she hadn't gone into work and, without being asked, clearing snow off automobiles on the lot and shovelling the walkway to her office.
Tremblay shared unsought information with the woman, including the fact he'd been in jail, had hurt his ex, was not allowed to see his daughter and, by the way, he was also that guy who'd famously tried to stop his girlfriend from having an abortion.
He noted the woman's husband left her alone at the dealership quite a lot, which wasn't safe.
All of this made the woman uneasy, such that the hair on the back of her neck stood up. On one occasion, when she fearfully called her husband, Tremblay still refused to get lost, although never overtly asked to do so. He was no less relentless with the husband present. On Day 5, the couple called police.
Tremblay first made headlines in 1989 when he obtained an injunction to stop his girlfriend from aborting her fetus. A Quebec Court of Appeal upheld that injunction and the case went to the Supreme Court, which unanimously overturned the ruling.
A week before that landmark decision, though, the 21-year-old woman went to the United States and had her abortion.
