BOSTON -- Red Sox third baseman Mike Lowell is done for the year because of a bad hip.

The MVP from last year's World Series will have surgery Monday. He was left off Boston's roster for the AL Championship Series against Tampa Bay because of the problem.

Lowell said before Game 4 of the ALCS that he wanted to have surgery soon so he could be ready for the start of spring training.

This really doesn't come to a shocker to me at all sir. Some reports were saying that he was hurt really bad and probably wouldn't be available throughout the playoffs.

Why would TB now have a better shot? Lowell wasn't on the ALCS roster and was ineligible to play in this series.

Yes, but it was probable for him to be back .... now its official.

He wasn't eligible to play in this series after being replaced on the roster in the middle of the Angels series. Per league rules, he wouldn't have been eligible to play until the World Series, so this news is irrelevant as it relates to the ALCS.
