I'm drawing a blank. Are you sure this is a cliché that I would have heard before?

Wow, that's good Smitch. Very poetic, although I'm not sure these last eight years qualify as a nightmare in the grand scheme of things. The standard of living in America is still unbelievably high compared to the rest of the world. I think the inevitable collapse of Social Security and Welfare will usher in the true nightmare of our times.

All true RS, with the exception of having a loved one killed in Iraq.

That's very true, and I should've acknowledged that. The loss of American lives in the Middle East is completely unacceptable, and my heart still creeps into my throat whenever I drive by the crosses on Highway 24.

I doubt that any prior president had both a long, disastrous war, and an economic catastrophe, like Georgie Porgie has had.

LBJ had a disatrous, losing war, but no economic meltdown. (The recession and then inflation came later, with Nixon and Carter, but both tied to Vietnam.)

Herbert Hoover wasn't responsible for the stock market collapse, but got the blame, and for the subsequent Depression. (Many blame the Great Depression on the Fed lossening of credit; as many now blame the Fed for the same thing)

But Hoover had no war while he was in office.

                                Bush had the Titanic Exacta.

Congrats, George. Try not to make it a fukkin trifecta in your last hundred days.

This cliche - if that's what it is - has been around a long time.

I think I first heard it at the end of the Vietnam War. (I've been around a long time, too.)

Also, and definitely, at the time of the Nixon resignation.

Probably wasn't used at the end of WWI and WWII. Except for those who lost relatives or friends in those conflicts, most Americans viewed them as distant sporting events, to cheer our heroes and to boo the other team.

                                            Right. No one will.

GWB presidency will likely be the historical marker for our long slow drain down the sh1tpipe of History.

He didn't start it - the great dream of the Founders foundered some time ago, maybe with the FDR admin, or probably even earlier with Puddinhead Wilson - but his total and comic incompetence, brash ignorance and lack of class, highlighted it.

This quiz, I in restropect think, was unfair. Inasmuch as it's very likely that the great majority of posters on this board are under 40, and were either unborn or mere children when the statement was originally made.

Which was by President Gerald Ford (best football player who was pres) upon the occasion when he gave a pardon to the disgraced former president Richard Nixon.

This would have happened around the mid 1970s.

Altho I think I've heard the poetic cliche a few times since then.

In any case, it will be thought if not spoken come January 20, 2009.
