Is there some kind of rule that Texas, Virginia Tech, and Florida State must start the season way over ranked?

Just look @ their schedule. That is how Champs are made. Cakewalk schedules, that are anchored by home games vs Sisters of the poor.

had a convo about this last week...if the fsu defense is as good as advertised, they should have no problem running through one of the weakest schedules on anyones calender, even with a few tough road games... so i can see where phil is coming from...uh sort of...
but i laugh at the rankings... #1 defense... #11 offense ... #3 special teams... when you play in the cupcake ACC conference, what do all these rankings really mean? NOT SHIT!

Don't sleep on FSU. Who predicted Auburn to win the championship in 2011? Anything can happen in college football. We got 8 returning starters (22 of the top 25 defenders return) on defense (Including two of the best DE's in the nation Brandon Jenkins & Bjoern Warner) that gave up 275 total yards a game last year.. We also only gave up 2.3 yards per carry last year. According to ESPN Stats & Info, only Alabama allowed a smaller percentage of rushes to go for five or more yards than the Noles. We had the 6th best defense statistically in 2011. We also have arguably the best secondary in the nation headed by: Greg Reid, Xavier Rhodes, Lamarcus Joyner, Terrance Parks. Add into the mix one of the best LB's in the nation, Nigel Bradham, this defense will be scary as hell..
I'll be the first to admit that Florida State struggled offensively last year, that was our only weakness. But you have to remember that E.J Manuel QB suffered a shoulder injury early in the year against Oklahoma. Receiver's Burt Reed (ankle), Kenny Shaw (concussion), and Rashad Greene (ankle) all missed part of the year as well. And then of course there was offensive line who injury after injury was forced to start 4 TRUE FRESHMAN for the end of the year (including our bowl game victory against Notre Dame). We also lost our starting tailback, Chris Thompson for more than half of the year. We were just plagued by injuries, as long as that doesn't happen we should be fine offensively.. Our offensive line, one of our worst weaknesses last year should be a strength for us this year.
On top of that you gotta remember that West Virginia wussed out (Savannah State replacing them on the schedule) so we now open the season with 3 easy opponents to start the year. If the Seminoles beat Virginia Tech & Clemson, we go undefeated (we are still a year or two ahead of both Miami & Florida).
Either way, anything short of a BCS bowl should be considered a failure for Florida State. IMO we were overated going into last year, we were still a really young team. This is the year where you will see what Jimbo Fisher & Mark Stoop's are made of. They have brought in another top 5 recruiting class for Florida State this year, this team should be considered a threat for the next couple of years.

Florida State plays in a crap conference. The onoy way they get into the Championship game is if they go undefeated and only one other teams from the "Big Four" conferences (Big 10, Big 12, Pac 12, and SEC) go undefeated. If Florida State has the same won-loss record as any other team in the Big 4 Conferences, they lose the vote. Florida State has also lost two or more games as a favorite every season since 2000, and has not lost less than 3 games in a season since 2000. Dream on Florida State fans. Best case scenario for you is another "who cares" Orange Bowl.

Nigel Bradham is gone and the O-line will not be a strength, Black Haze.
But the defense will be the best in the nation if injuries are minimal.
Noles are the best bet for the price.

FSU was getting darkhorse Natl Title love last year and was in everybody's top 5 or 6.....you see how that turned out. They do have a pretty easy schedule though.

As an OU alumni, I just hope we don't have any more embarrassing losses.
My expectations are 10-2 and conference champs.
Watch us lose on the road at TCU and on the road at West Virginia....

Just capped Fsu last week. They have possibly the best defense on paper youll find, tremendous special teams and a all acc kicker. I have them power ranked at 89/100 with only 7 teams ahead of them.
EJ manuel isnt the issue. They return 2/5 OL and 1/3 recievers. Theyll have issues opening holes for their young but talented backs. I dont know if theyre capable of staying healthy enough on offense to beat great teams in the end. If they can get solid production from their offense the sky is the limit. I have them losing 1-3 games with this said. Clemson will give them fits and any team capable of putting up 21+ has a chance to knock them off.
I also agree that the ACC will not get a bid to the national championship game with a single loss.
My picks for the season champs is WVU, Georgia (who has a equal defense to FSU with a much better offense) and hard to bet against Bama.
I dont like USC they play to the level of their competition year in year out, theyll be similar to okla st last season I believe.
