I work hard to support the family, I give a shit about the man.
but I'm a finish carpenter and and ever since the housing boom went boom there is hardley any work to be found. I get a few jobs a month now on a good month.

that is how the man keep you down. they want to hire family man because they won't cause trouble. henry ford used to hire people to go to worker's houses and make sure their family life is going well. the man is just using your wife and kids as leverage to keep you as a drone.

MMike I work part-time for a home improvement company...I am sorry to hear your jobs are low....but here in the Northeast where things aren't as bad as Florida, Las Vegas, Texas etc...things are slow here to. Even jobs you make a deal on...people with 630 credit scores are getting turned down now no exceptions....An average 8k job is now at around 6500 and dropping.

I guess it has slowed down some, but it sure ain't what I'd call real slow in Central Texas right now. Plenty of money to be made still in the construction biz.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Almost half of U.S. workers do not respect their boss and only half believe they are competent, according to an online survey released on Friday.
The study by Randstad USA, a unit of the world's number two staffing company Randstad NV, found that the growing financial crisis has seen companies focusing more on their bottom line at the expense of relations with employees.
"Employees' professional development and morale should always be a priority for employers and especially in an economic slowdown when employees may feel additional burdens," said Randstad director Eric Buntin.
The Internet survey of 2,337 people also found only 43 percent think their boss is open to new ideas and only 47 percent were willing to work overtime to impress their boss and create more job security for themselves.
Less than 30 percent believed their bosses were fulfilling their roles as motivators, role models or mentors.
"When it comes to impressing the boss to create more job security during hard times of economic uncertainty, the survey indicates women are willing to work harder," Buntin said. "A healthy employee-employer relationship greatly contributes to an overall positive workplace attitude."
The survey was carried out by Harris Interactive. Data was weighted to be representative of the total U.S. population based on region, age within gender, education, household, income, and race.

theres still work here its just slim pickens now. 90% of my work is new construction but been doing more remodeling lately to keep the cash flow moving. But than we got all the unlicensed/uninsured hacks that will work for nothing which leaves professionals like myself that pay taxes/WC insurance/GL etc... struggling to get jobs. Others are doing work so cheap all they're doing is keeping their guys busy, not really turning a profit. All this screws every contractor over in the long term.

You stated jobs that used to go for 8K are now going for 6K. Why? why you gonna cut your own throat just cause banks arent leanding like they used to. IF its an 8K job than its an 8K job plain and simple.

I wont deal with customers that think I gonna drop my price $1000 b/c the market is slow. Regardless how slow the market is I still have to make money to survive.

Next time you go to a doctor/lawyer/dentist tell them since the market is slow that your only willing to pay them 1/2 of what you normally pay them. See what happens. Contractors need to wake the **** up and realise that they're the ones screwing us over that make it so hard for other contractors to stay in business.

MMike, I agree with holding price, its the company I work for. If the client gets turned down for a 8k project....We will resubmit the project for $7,700 then drop, drop, etc...on average I see a 20% drop in these instances...at a average 10% clip that's alot of lost commission. This week though things have been busier...families want things done for the holidays...I wish you alot of work before and through the holidays!

my work comes in spurts. I'll go a few weeks without anything and than a few weeks busier than hell. I dont mind though. I can work a couple weeks and make a killing and than take a break a week or two.

Just turned in a bid for a $7200 trim job today and a $3200 trim job 2 days ago. Hopefully I'll get at least one of them if not both.
