Unless they have changed the way they quantify the Dow since I was in business school 8 years ago, the Dow is to be completely ignored. After learning why it was to be ignored (which I have forgotten by now), I found myself not even glancing at it when reading up on financial markets and the economy. The Dow is a joke and means absolutely nothing, its because of the way they measure it and a few other factors.

To gain a perspective on how American stocks are doing, start with the S&P 500.
