Anyone here using a wireless router?
I have a wireless Linksys router at one end of my house and was having real trouble getting a signal to laptop on the other side of the house. Sound familiar? I tried everything to improve signal strength and almost gave up. Then I came across the simplest solution..... you can build this little gizmo in about 5 minutes (no Lie!) with cardboard and tin foil, put it on one of the antennae of your router and aim it where you want your signal to go. From a weak 2 bars to a solid 5 now on the taskbar. looks a little goofy but it works like a hot dam. It's called the Windsurfer. By the way, it works much better on my Linksys if I only use 1 of these AND remove the other antenna.
Play around with how you position it to get your best reception.

    Here's the link :

Or just upgrade to an N router for improved speed and range... Personally, I stay away from wireless. I can't have the latency with my programs...

I have a linksys router in my office and it's horrible. I hate it. I have a D link at home and have never had an issue. Well, the only issue I had was I couldn't get a good signal in the garage but in the house everything was fine.

Routers are an investment like anything else, can't buy one for $25 and expect it to carry a signal flawlessly, I'd guess laptop wireless setup or hardware might play a part but for the most part, I find that quality up to date routers in the $60 price range tend to outperform those which are lower priced.

You can get a relay (not sure if this is the correct terminology or not) for a router as well can't you?

                wireless

Linksys also makes one called a Range Expander for about 80 bucks.

Linksys routers are crap out of the box, but they work great with 3rd party firmware installed. They run at about 5% of their true capability from Linksys, but can push a wireless signal up the block with 3rd party firmware.

If you have a WRT-54G v5 or older, get dd-wrt firmware at the following location and turn your Linksys router into a powerful wireless device.

Mine's a WRT-54GS version 6 so no luck with the juiced up firmware. For no cost this little fix accomplishes the same thing.

Why spend the $75 bucks when this will do same thing for free?
I don't see the N routers being all their cracked up to be. I bought a DLink extreme N router, and ended up taking it back.
There was no improvement in either coverage or throughput.

Maybe because of aesthetics, perhaps? Although, I often forget that many of you are broke. You do realize that your network adapter needs to be N capable to utilize the increased range and speeds, correct? There is definitely a difference...

Wireless definitely cuts down on your speed but is convenient

you need to get a better router...one with better signal strength. Or you have a shitty network card in your laptop, which is very common.

Get something similar to that and you should be good to go.

you can find them on sell for refurbished units at. www.1saleaday.com www.woot.com occasionally.
