A lot of people reach their 30's broke. He can probably get welfare/unemployment and gamble. To your point its a lot safer to gamble loads of money and owe bookies than to drink and party and end up injured or killed in a DUI accident. My DUI 3 years ago probably cost me more money than patty has ever lost gambling and it was only a misdemeanor. I know a few that cost them 40+ in lawyers alone. Then another 20 in misc and another 10 in added insurance premiums for 5 years.
