Vlad Guerrero in police custody following a bar brawl in the Dominican Republic
Idle hands are the Devil’s workshop. Vlad Guerrero’s hands are idle for the first time during the baseball season in about 20 years, and if you believe the Dominican National Police, he was putting them to poor use last night. Assuming this translation is close to accurate, it sounds like he assaulted a police officer:
The National Police on Tuesday announced an all points bulleting for the arrest of Major League Baseball star Vladimir Guerrero, for the alleged aggression against to a Police major and for unleashing a brawl in a discotheque.
Police spokesman Maximo Baez said one of Guerrero’s brothers, two cousins and a worker are being held for their alleged part in the melee.
“Police chief major general (Jose) Polanco instructed Baní regional (south) director general (Juan Ramon) de la Cruz Martinez to continue the pursuit,” Baez said.

Yeah it is a shame. He still hits for average, .290 last year and .300 the year before.

The main reason he is not in the Majors is his price. Veterans do not come cheap, and he lacks versatility.

All that said, I can not believe the Yanks chose Raul Ibanz over Jonny Damon/Vlad. Ibanz has been done for 2 years and counting.

Give a cop a little rank down here and they act like God. Waiting to hear all the details, shots were fired apparently, unusual for Vlad to get in trouble....he has done a lot for his hometown - schools, medical clinics, baseball fields etc. He was with some familymembers, might be a case of him coming to one of their defense......

great hitter but his obp is pretty damn low since he doesn't get enough walks.

Definitely a hacker, but a career .379 ob% is great for a dude who averaged 34 hr/yr and only 74 k's/yr. 67 dudes struck out over 100 times last year in the league just to give some perspective on how little Vlad K'd fora power hitter.

I got an update, starting to look like the whole thing is over blown.
Vlad turned himself in, not even going to be detained.

Former major leaguer Vladimir Guerrero said he has surrendered to police after authorities contend he attacked a police officer in a disco. Guerrero denied being part of an attack.
Police said no charges have been filed against Guerrero following the mayhem in Nizao, about 40 miles from Santo Domingo.
Maximo Baez Aybar, a spokesman for the police in the Dominican Republic, maintained Guerrero "physically attacked" police officer Renato Pena Rojas after a brawl broke out in the disco. Baez Aybar asked that Guerrero turn himself in "so the case can be put in the hands of the justice system."
"At no time did I attack anyone, nor was I fleeing," Guerrero told The Associated Press. "I presented myself at the jail last night after the complaint from the disco, and this morning first thing I went to the police that are handling the case."
His lawyer, Polivio Rivas, added: "All that is being alleged is false. Vladimir did not attack anyone -- absolutely no one. We're going to follow the process, but everything will be cleared up."
Guerrero, once one of the most feared hitters in baseball, is a free agent after finishing last season with the Baltimore Orioles.

Yeah, it hardly even made the news here. Even if something did go down, with Vlad's good reputation and deep pockets it would be brushed under the rug.

Tampa was willing to give head case Manny a shot, Vlad would give them some presence in that lineup as a DH and a solid vet. Luke Scott and Keppinger, I think they could find room.
