Former No. 1 overall pick and current Rays minor leaguer Matt Bush was arrested Thursday night after being involved in an accident that seriously injured a 72-year-old motorcyclist, according to multiple reports.
According to NBC 2 in Fort Myers, Florida Highway Patrol said Bush's Dodge SUV hit a motorcycle and then he fled the scene.
"Literally the tire on the SUV ran over the driver's head," witness Scott Sugden told the TV station. "Without the helmet, the gentleman would have been dead instantly."
Bush has been charged with fleeing the scene with serious injuries, driving with a suspended license with serious injuries, DUI with serious injuries and DUI with property damage.
Bush was taken first overall by the Padres in 2004 as a shortstop. He was shortly suspended after getting in a fight outside an Arizona Bar. He was also involved in another drinking-related incident before the Padres traded him to Toronto in 2009. Later the Blue Jays released him.
Bush signed with the Rays in 2010 and has turned into a middle relief prospect in the Tampa Bay organization. Some even expected him to make the big leagues for the first time this season, but that's now in serious debate.
Bush is one of just three first-overall picks from 2007 or before that hasn't made the big leagues. Steve Chilcott (1966) and Brien Taylor (1991) are the others. Tim Beckham (2008), Bryce Harper (2010) and Gerrit Cole (2011) have yet to make the majors either, but they still have plenty of time.
