Can Someone Explain How Sports Exchanges Work (ie Matchbook, Betfair)?
Hey everyone, I already have an account at Pinnacle for a long time, and just made one at Matchbook. How exactly does Matchbook work? I don't understand the whole exchange idea. Can you still wager big money on games? Thanks in advance.

On an exchange, the book puts up a market.

For example, on tonight's game, there are these markets:

    New York+9
    San Diego-9

    Over 44.5
    Under 44.5

    New York Win
    San Diego Win

On each market, you have two choice. You can place an offer. Say you like San Diego -9. The best price you see is Pinnacle -9 +110. You could just bet it at Pinnacle, or place an offer at Matchbook.

You select San Diego -9, pick the price: +113, and put in the amount of the offer: $5000.

At that point, you have an unmatched offer. If it gets matched by someone else (who picks New York +9 -113), you'll have a bet for as much as is matched.

Your other option is to accept someone else's offer. There is already SD-9 +111 as an offer. Even though this is higher than Pinnacle's +110, it is less after commissions. They will charge you 2% of your winnings, so +111 is actually about +109.

Matchbook is greatest when you have time to build your position, or in the hour before a game when there are the most offers.

Just don't ask Justin about the nuances of making markets or providing a fair amount of liquidity to the exchange. He'll tell you Matchbook doesn't want that information out there, which seems strange if you ask me.
