What sport has the most pointless regular season? which has the most important?
watching these college tournies and i got to thinking

the regular season in small confernce is useless

    for me personally

    i would say

1: NBA over half the teams make the playoffs and they give 25% effort during the regular season a less its a big game on abc or something

nhl over half the teams make it

nfl: if you get hot at the end of the season your gold

then college basketball might as well not play the regular season if your in a small conference cause if you dont win your tourney you wont make the dance anyway(see MTSU, Iona, possibly Drexel, and Oral Roberts)

College Football: if your not in the top 20 to start the year or in the SEC, you better go undefeated and beat everyone by 50 or you wont play for the bcs title or in a bcs bowl game

i would say mlb has the most useful regular season the rest need more importance to them could shorten and that would be better

feel free to disagree and state what you think has the most pointless and most important regular season

i said ncaa basketball is least important..

the problem with college football is unless they create a playoff, its all about were you start ranked in preseason..

      cause if bama starts 1

      usc 2

      and they win out

even if number 4 oklahoma wins out they dont even get a stiff of a chance

Actually it's closer to 25% of mlb teams make the playoffs (8 out of 30 so that's probably 27.3% if my brain still works).

You play 162 games in a season and IF you do make the playoffs it can be all over in 3 games.

Make the regular season 20 games shorter. Add in 8 more teams to the playoffs (16 total) and make playoff rounds 9 games.

Best teams should still win but it makes the regular season more competitive.

I guess I want to be more of a baseball fan, but cheering for the Jays it is difficult to do being in the same division as the Yanks, Bosox and Rays.

i hear ya i agree that it could use some work and the regular season is too long...

but if you make it 16 teams that it takes the importance of the regular season away.

but adding an extra wild card will defintely help the jays this year.. so you will have something to watch for

The Orioles and Blue Jays will always be a step behind. I actually remember coming home from a car ride and listening to Joe Carter hit a home run to win the World Series back in 93(I think that was the last time-or 2nd time they won it back to back). Anyways, I'm always excited for the season to start but as the season goes along I lose interest. I don't have a bandwagon team and I've never been able to find a money winning way to cap mlb.

All I'm saying is I think more teams making the playoffs is a positive for smaller markets. I'm assuming from your post that more teams are making the playoffs this year? If so, what is the structure?

i agree with the small market thing

im a pirate fan living in nj

                    this year the structure

                    is

                    the 3 division winners

and then the best 2 records are the wild cards

the 2 wild cards will then play in a one game playoff. and the winner will then play the top division winner

and same here im not very good at capping baseball either might make a thread about it

heres to a blue jay and pirate world series

Hmmmm, I don't follow baseball so the double wild card is news to me. What do you think of a 1 game playoff?

Of course the first step is positive....... I have many more thoughts but I'll just stick with it's a first step.

If either the Blue Jays and/or Pirates make the Worst Series I'll be cheering for both and actually enjoy watching the games.

its a step in the right direction and puts a premium on winning the division for sure.. so you can have your ace game 1 rather than your number 2 pitcher...

i think it should be a best of 3 rather than one game though

The NHL and the NBA have the most meaningless. The NHL gets the nod for the most meaningless regular season because the top seeds are often defeated, at least the tops teams in the NBA regular season usually advance to the finals.

Having less teams make the playoffs makes the regular season more important. More teams into the playoffs lessens the credibility of the playoffs if half of the league makes it like in the NBA.

The more games there are, the less important each one of them actually are. Throw in a freaking 1 game playoff series and baseball's regular season is a joke.

college hoops has to be the least important...especially these days when double digit seeds are a threat to make the final four

the funny thing is that the nba has the least amount of major upsets in the playoffs because of the nature of the sport....look at the past champions of a league and you could argue that when the best reg season teams win consistently (nba and ncaaf), the regular season is most important
