I used to drink heavily as well, it was in my twenties. Sports, gym and Yoga helped to control it. Now I drink rarely. The Yoga of knowledge, not yoga excercise. It might change the way you look at things. Drinking is fun but once you are hooked is disgusting. The same as gambling. You just need to find things that increase your serotonin level as alcohol. Excercise, sex, gambling, going to the beach, yoga, laughing, positive thinking. I beat the alcohol. But havent been able to beat been a jerk.
