If I were Turner I would have told Hochuli on the sideline that he could either call the fumble and end the game, or watch the Chargers walk off the field instead of participate in his alternate ending.

I remember a team walking off the field once, way back in some overseas soccer league, and a ref definitely doesn't want that type of attention.
