Vince Young confides in his therapist that he's contemplating suicide and because of a police report, everyone on the planet has to know about it now. That's pretty shitty.

Does that therapist have any ethics whatsoever? What a piece of work. Good way to lose business as far as I'm concerned, maybe they can share that stuff on a technicality, but it doesn't sound like discretion was used properly here from what we know.

Good point Crayl, the therapist should be held accountable. Don't they have a oath or something, how can you get people to say the truth if your going to call the cops for your own safety?

He will also probably start losing some endorsements or opportunities. It's not really fair to cut someone off for mental health reasons particularly when the guy hasn't hurt anyone or done anything other than being depressed with himself, but you don't want a guy making headlines for thinking of offing himself as the spokesperson for your clothing line.

She was looking out for the best interest of Young. I don't blame her, she had to do it. If he blows his brains out in his car, they're going to ask why she didn't let anyone know he was suicidal.

It comes down to the press and there's nothing you can do. Everyone is a "yenta" and has to know everyone's business nowadays. In the old days, nobody ever reported what Babe Ruth was doing after games.

Doesn't the therapist lose their license for violating patient confidentiality.

If someone confides their trust in you, about things that personal (as a star athlete), chances are you have the green light to talk them down and give the kind of professional help they're seeking. People that are serious about blowing their brains out just do it, anyone that talks about doing it usually never does. The therapist made the wrong decision, would they have leaked this if this was some average joe from down the street?

The same type of shit happened to a dude at the doctor's office this year around me. He told the doctor that he drank a 12 pack a day, and the doctor told the DMV, who suspended his license to drive, even though he has never even had a ticket.

If you can't trust the therapist to not tell anyone, then a bunch of people will stop telling things to to professionals who are there to help. What the hell are the cops going to do? Put him in jail on the suicide watch sector, I doubt it. It was totally useless to get the coppers involved, and it made it worse which is usually what happens when the cops are notified.

She has to tell. She doesn't have a choice.

                      When is Therapy Not Confidential?
Your Therapist is sometimes required to share information

Psychotherapy is a private process that often involves discussion of very sensitive issues. Most therapy clients assume that the things that they say to their therapist are completely confidential. This is usually true, but there are exceptions. Some of the exceptions may surprise you.

                      * Most people are aware that confidentiality can be broken if the client is believed to be a danger to him or herself or someone else. A psychologist or other mental health professional may be required to break confidentiality in order to protect the client or the person that they are threatening to harm.

Sometimes it's a good thing when a psychologist talks like when one of the Menendez brothers confessed to killing their parents.
