NFL PICKS: Even without Brady, The Patriots will take down the Jets
Who would have thought the N.Y. Jets would lead this column two weeks in a row? Who would have further thought that New England would be a 2 1/2-point underdog this weekend? With QB Tom Brady out for the season, the Patriots’ trip to see the Jets has gotten a bit more interesting. At the center of the talk surrounding both teams is who is behind center.
For New England, Matt Cassel takes over for Brady, who hasn’t missed a game in nearly seven years. Cassel stepped in last week and led the Patriots to a 17-10 victory over the Chiefs although they didn’t cover the 16 1/2-point spread. Cassel’s stats were good: 13 completions in 18 attempts for 152 yards and a TD. The question is whether, having had a week to think about it, Cassel’s nerves will get the best of him in this contest.
For the Jets, Brett Favre makes his second start in a non-Green Bay uniform. Last week in Miami Favre was 15 for 22 for 194 yards and 2 TDs, a good start for Favre and his new team. However, the question mark in this game really isn’t how Favre will perform in his first home start for the Jets, it is how his counterpart will perform in his new starting role.
Since we can only guess at the answer to that question, let’s rely on what we know for a fact to determine the out come of this game: Bill Belichick is arguably one of the best to ever coach in the NFL. In my mind, he has prepared his team to not only prove it shouldn’t have been an underdog, but that they are more than just Tom Brady. … Patriots.
