Mike, Would you say it's worth it just for the self-satisfaction in knowing you accomplished something not alot of people can say they have?

The problem you'll find if you're serious is getting a publisher to actually read it. Most manuscripts are not even read and of the ones that are they basically scan read the first two or three pages and if you're lucky they won't steal your idea.

It's a difficult thing to get into.

The way to sell and market a sucessful book is to have the support of a decent publisher and the make use of networks they have, so it's a conundrum.

I understand, did you just lose patience with them or what sparked you to take the reins yourself?

I did it and soon realised I was gonna be on my own. To cut a very long story very short, I did some local soccer games for my local newspaper and through that got to know a publisher who specialised in sports books. One thing led to another and I decided to follow the Chargers to every game of the 2002 season and keep a diary about it, so basically I ended up in places like Buffalo in the middle of winter looking for fat girls to fvck and then write about.

As soon as I'd written it the publisher started saying he could only publish it if I paid the printing costs and I later found out that is their favourite trick, by that time they think you're so invested in your dream you'll be blinded by the thought of getting your book published.

I told him to fvck off on principle and got it published myself but it's a nightmare. To try and crack the retail paublishing market is next to impossible. As I said before, people like Amazon and Borders want everything their own way and they also want you to advertise and market the book....something a normal working man can't afford.

I ended up selling quite a few to family and friends and ended up standing outside Quallcomm Stadium for every game for two years, i did ok in the end and people loved it.

The bottom line is, if your dream is to publish a book, do it and publish it yourself. Unless you can find a publisher that's prepared to publish it for you you must consider it as a hobby.

              Just my two cents.

If you're serious, there's nothing stopping you wrinting a book and saving it to disc and sending it to 100 publishers, it'll cost you 100 stamps. All I'd say is, don't ever lose sight of reality and you'll be ok. Writnig a book is fantastic fun, i'd never put anyone off the fundemental principle, it's the comerce that fvcks it up.

Here's a rough synopsis of some 'fiction' I've been thinking about turning into a NY Times best seller...

Legendary gambler and poster DD Brown is on the lam and trying to escape the mean streets of Hoboken, NJ, after running up 50 G's in losses with a local bookie who has connections to Tampa organized crime figure named Cinnamon Bun. Brown calls in favors from his Hoboken Gang -- Tripps, Dicky Chorizo and Little Boy Stan -- to pull together enough cash to play a 10-team parlay that, if it hits, will be enough to pay off the bookie and avoid having his kneecaps relocated up around his watch pocket.

Meanwhile Cinnamon Bun has dispatched his harem of hit girls -- GoodyDeena, Squealer, NorseGoddess and BeerBabe -- to Hoboken to try and collect the debt from Brown. He's given them orders to "do whatever it takes" to make Brown pay.

And that's where the hilarious adventure begins. Once on the big silver screen, I see it starring:

                            Danny DeVito as DD Brown
                            Russell Crowe as Cinnamon Bun
                            Joe Pesci as Dicky Chorizo
                            Johnny Depp as Tripps
Kevin James as Little Boy Stan
                            Cameron Diaz as GoodyDeena
                            Holly Hunter as Squealer
                            Helen Hunt as NorseGoddess
                            Hillary Swank as BeerBabe
John Candy (back from the grave) as Biggie Bee, file clerk
and introducing Gomez the Wonder Cat as the narrator.

                            * This film has not yet been rated. Some scenes are graphically silly in nature while others are downright gross and may not be suitable for gamblers that upchuck easily. Offer not valid in Louisiana, Oklahoma and several other Third World Countries. Pennsylvania residents add 8.25% sales tax.
