Flying is horrendously bad for the environment, a huge invasion of privacy, and usually both expensive (for those of us who aren't one percenters like Opie...) and inconvenient if you like to be flexible in your travel plans... So I made the decision awhile back not to fly anymore unless there is absolutely no other alternative... And once you start looking there are plenty of alternatives...

bus service - Greyhound and probably other options if coming from somewhere close like California
ride share websites - craiglists has a section along with other options
hitchhiking - hitchwiki.org, www.digihitch.com
amtrak

And, of course, what better way to get to know a fellow poster (or several? ) then car pool on a road trip...

Currently I believe I will be coming to bash from the San Diego area so if anyone is heading from that direction and wants to split gas cost let me... If not I will be using one of the alternatives above...

This is in good thought but I really wouldn't enjoy driving 4000km (2500 miles). Busing it is even worse at that far a distance. If I come I'll drive to Detroit and fly to Vegas.

I'll be taking my suv -alone- to the airport......where I'll board a private jet to take me on the short flight to LV.

I've taken greyhound on similar long trips and while better alternatives exist outside the United States' drive your boat sized SUV and fly everywhere territory it isn't all that bad... Less then two days from Detroit to Vegas, $220 if you get your ticket in advance, and faster then driving (when figure things like overnight stops and such)...

While I'm sure the trip will be partially subsidized from profits derived from Daddy's oil wells I'll bet your 4 year old daughter won't be all that grateful for your oil-burning materialism when reaches your old age...

For those who live within 250 or 300 miles of LV, going with a group of guys could be great fun. But my one-way trip on the highways would be three days and about 2500 miles, so that option is out.

Here is the thing. I commend you for wanting to help the enviorment but here is the thing. The planes that we dont take still are going fly and still put out the same amount of emissions weather we are on it or not. So in reality not taking the plane and taking a car that wouldnt of went to vegas in the first place would actually be increasing emmisions.

Partially true as I'm in and out of money all the time (which is why I mentioned expense in my original post)... Currently I'm (somewhat...) in "in mode" but who knows in August... Regardless won't be flying for any travel anywhere in or around the United States...
